Unlikely, my dad lives in France.

OK, so she would be trying to borrow €300 instead. :p
  • Why does he need £600 ?

With our family, we work on the basis, of "no, I'm not lending it you, but I will give it to you unconditionally. Maybe one day you'll pay me back, or maybe one day you will be there to help me, when I need a hand. Now what help do you need to get back on your feet? "

In this case, I'd be suggesting that he paint the outside of my house, and decorate my attic bed room, in order to pay for it. Then if he really needs the money he will have to work for it.

On a related point, we have a habit of giving people cars in our family. Wife gave her freind a mini 850 back in the mid 90's. Fil gave us a Cavalier when he was offered something silly in p/x on a new car, and I offered to sell it for 5 times that offer. He decided my offer to flog it was enough reason to give it to me.

Give a family member money because you will never see it again, so pointless calling it a loan.

The deceased's sister has now coughed up £1300 to cover it. I wonder how much pressure they had to apply to get that?
I am now keeping my son away from the lot of them

When our son needed money, we gave it to him, he is a single parent of 2 teens, works hard at 2 jobs and is bringing up our grandchildren in a very good way. So he thoroughly deserves it, but that has not stopped him paying us back by carrying out the heavy work in our garden and house that we cannot do. He is doing this in the school holidays which provides us with the bonus of taking out our lovely grandchildren.

That is how a real, loving family works, whose members respect and love each other.

This guy is a parasite and I am sorry to say this, but your hubby does not sound much better. Spoilt brats, the pair of them.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I would ask your brother-in-law to produce the relevant bills that he wants paying in relation to this funeral. Then proceed to pay these bills yourselves. You are asking for disaster if you give him then cash, then find he comes back for more as the originals bills remain unpaid. Resign yourself to not getting this money back, see it as a charitable one-off donation.

I hope the deceased sister paid directly. It would be very sad if she lost her money to her sister-in-law.

    All very sad, this situation.

Well what a surprise! Brother in law has now bought a caravan, which according to my quick search on autotrader costs.....about £1300.

Looks like she has lost every penny to me. I think it is utterly despicable telling her that her dead brother would be incinerated without a funeral unless she coughed up and then......BUYING A CARAVAN!
