It worked in the Netherlands, right up until the EU smoking ban :)

It still does work. The Netherlands haven't banned the smoking of cannabis, only tobacco. And some coffee shops still have smoking areas where joints containing tobacco can be smoked, these areas are just segregated from the main areas to protect staff, and customers who do not wish to breathe in second hand smoke.

Well bitemebanker, I understand that people do get "pleasure" from drugs and alcohol but for me personally I don't get pleasure from losing control of my mind for periods, feeling dizzy and being sick.

I know what you're going to say next - don't be so uptight/ let your hair down. But really, I don't want to risk addiction and I don't need those type of chemicals to be happy.

Of course I do drink tea and coffee but not to the extent that they could affect me like illegal drugs and alcohol can. And no I don't smoke.

And who are you to say my OPINION is wrong?

The world referred to by some of the posters here is not one that I know - nor would I wish to know. What I do know is that I have lost friends who in their youth smoked hash - not tobacco - and gave it up years ago - but have still succumbed to cancer. I also know of people of the ages of my children whose lives have been blighted by recreational drugs - some now suffering psychotic episodes, some now with criminal records.

I apologise if my comments do not go down well with the "recreational" drug users amongst readers here - but you cannot classify drinking tea and coffee and the occasional alcoholic drink in the same way.
  • All these people with holier than thou attitudes makes me laugh. I bet you drink wine and beer, the difference is probably that alcohol is miles worse for your health than speed or cocaine and the deaths per year, thousands for alcohol.
Any drinker can never ever be a judge of a drug user.

O.P you just need to talk to your partner, he may be a one off user or have a real problem. Its upto you to discuss with him what the issue is, how you feel and think about a way forward for yourself.

Taking drugs must surely be the most secretive activity in the UK, we all will know folk who do it but they won't tell us because after all, it's illegal, that doesn't make them any worse than us as humans. Humans will always be curious about mind altering substances, it's natural and dimey: it doesn't mean you feel sick and dizzy, it can make you feel warm and good and relaxed. I think it all boils down to how much of a risk taker you are, that's why younger people are more inclined to indulge. As you get older you start to realise that it's `not all that` and pleasure can be derived from more safer activities.

    Cannabis does not cause cancer.

Yes, I do drink wine occasionally and no, it is not worse for my health. I am now 70 but I've not lived a "sheltered" life - I've worked with drug and alcohol abusing youngsters, I grew up through the pill-popping weekends, through the puff parties, and sadly lost friends, and seen my childrens' friends and others whose lives have been ruined by drugs. I've also seen lives ruined by alcohol - but to excuse illegal drug taking by saying that alcohol will damage you more is just taking the easy way out.

Any addiction is dangerous, and in my experience, it is far easier to become addicted to drugs than alcohol.

The OP already has a son who is in jail for illegal trading in drugs. Do you really think that she and her partner just need to "talk about it"? This smacks of taking liberal ideals to the extreme.

The point is that the legal recreational drugs (alcohol, tobacco) are much more harmful than many banned substances. Unless your entire social and familial circle consists of tee-total, non-smokers, then you already inhabit such a 'world'.

My grandfather was an alcoholic and died of liver cirrhosis. Both of my parents have COPD caused by smoking tobacco, which will kill them. On the other hand, I know no-one who has or is killing themselves with 'recreational drugs'. We've all got an anecdotal story to highlight our point, which is why we need to stick to the scientific facts.

Having an 'occasional drink' is no different to occasionally taking a pill, but you are more likely to do yourself and other people harm with the former.
Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one. :)

What drugs are you talking about specifically?

"Drugs" is a pretty broad term, and not one i think you can apply to the statement that you made above.
