I don't think this has been mentioned on this thread (too much troll-activity to be certain) - but she surely would have needed an MOT in order to renew her car tax...?

I appreciate that the MOT may have expired before the tax needs renewing - but anyone on here who says that you don't need an MOT pass is surely not renewing their tax either...

OP - maybe this is a good time to have a strong word with your DD? If she is the one driving the car, then SHE needs to be the one responsible for the paperwork and accurate record-keeping and has to make sure she knows where the documents are.

Best wishes in any case. x

A good option for the future is pay around £2 for a text to your phone when your m.o.t is next due this will go to some way to avoid a £60 loss in the future.

That's pretty useful. I just set up a reminder on my email for about a fortnight or so before it's due - it's free! ;)

Or set it up on your phone as an alarm. Though given the number of calls and letters on MOTs I had from a couple of garages I have done business with in the past, I didn't need it.

I did think of the car tax check. She taxed it for 12 months last year - expires end of this month. And it did have a MOT last summer. I have told her to put a reminder on her phone, as well as getting her own paperwork.

or set up an alarm on your pc or phone, there many options that are free before paying £2 for a text...this is MSE

of course there is the old fashioned way....make a note on your paper calendar thats hanging in the kitchen...simples

She can go along to any MOT centre with her V5C (some, seeing you in the car, wont even bother with that) and they can check on the computer if the car is MOT'd or not and print her off a new one for a small fee. Unless however the police have screwed up, they would have checked the same system.
Is the problem at the issuing garage, is it still in business?
if the police say she has no mot then there is no record of the mot with vosa.

but saying that if the garage keeps a record off all works done they should find her car booked in for an mot. she should also have an invoice stating this

Yep, I've read it again, I did caution, "they would have checked the same system", but why bother reading fully other comments on a forum unless you want to just chuck something in. This motoring forum will disappear up its own exhaust pipe like so many others before it.

Top stuff. It's easily done - I was pretty dreadful with paperwork when I first started driving. You could always buy her a little present of a sparkly pink plastic wallet, ring binder or storage box and tell her it's for keeping all her car documents together in one place.

When I moved into my house, away from my parents, it was the only way I could get organised - one folder for bank stuff, one for rent/housing stuff, one for car stuff, etc. It was a harsh wake-up call that I could no longer yell "Muuuummmmm!" and have the documents mysteriously 'instantly found' for me! ;)

A £60 fine for no MOT.

How much does the MOT cost, £54...not much of a deterrent is it?
