I had a cheque reversed well into the second month after clearing for funds. There was some dispute about words and figures not matching which hadn't been spotted by me or the banks until questioned by the buyer. I also had one reversed a week or so after clearing as there was a problem with it being a joint account and one party didn't have the right to sign or something after a certain date.

As with everything there is a risk, but we judge how best to avoid losing too much money. Nothing, apart from possibly bank transfers, are safe and burying our heads in the sand and pretending we are 100% anti scam proof doesn't help at all.

evidence of the fraud? where do you get this bull from?

my cheque book has been stolen, full stop, what is their to prove? if its stolen, its stolen.

You claim that months after you have used a cheque, you can just bowl into the bank and say "about cheque number so and so, get my money back", and they will just do it without asking for any evidence or invastigating??

Where do *you* get this bull from??

  • who said anything about months?

the simple fact remains, if you accept a paypal payment from a confirmed buyer and are elligible for seller protection on that transaction, then send via either recorded or special delivery, you have ticked all the criteria paypal ask of, and should something go wrong you are covered.

On the plus side, it soon won't be possible for cheques to be reversed after 'clearing' as the system is being changed.

P.S. Interesting to hear your experiences with cheques, Soolin. For comparison though, how many times have you had Paypal chargebacks against you?

I've never had a chargeback or any problems with paypal. That's why I have a preference for paypal, based on *my* personal experience it is a lot safer especially as you consider that probably less than 1% of my buyers actually use cheques. I am very aware that as soon as someone does have problems with paypal they turn against it, and to be honest after my experience with cheques I was hopping mad and for a while was seriously considering going paypal only. However, after I calmed down I realised that at some point or other I was going to run into problems whatever I used, so I still take cheques alongside paypal.

Curious, my experience is the opposite :)

I've experienced two Paypal chargebacks, and no bounced cheques.

The only trouble I've ever had with a cheque is one time I sent a cheque for some purchases and didn't receive anything - about 5 years ago.

Paypal will defend against a chargeback as long as you have complied with all seller protection criteria.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

i've already explained, you obviously dont have a clue what you are arguing on about.

if they perform a chargeback paypal will ask you to provide proof of posting, a royal mail tracking reference is the most common form of proof.

they check with royalmail.com, if the item has been delivered you keep your money.
