It is, if you're 16 and if you're still in education. If she was then to go on to find another job in retail, a lot want previous experience, which she would gain from this.

But she'd've had double the experience (and double the money) if mum hadn't put her oar in!

What a foolish comment, she's 16 for Gods sake. She may be asked to come back, she may get a permanent job from it, it will show that she has some retail experience whether she has worked 2 hours or 2 years.

You really cant win on these boards sometimes when some people act with troll like behaviour.
Do me a favour dunroamin, take your comments to a thread were they're appreciated....

I think you've probably knocked both of those possibilities on the head by your actions, which I hope your daughter appreciates. I reallt think that, being at home all day, you don't understand how the world of work operates.

Disagreeing with someone is not the same thing as being a troll.
  • The girl is 16!

It's probably a first job, it gives her an insight into working and she will gain some experience from it. No one is saying that a several hours is the same as working for a company for two years.

It'd probably make it easier for her to get a job at Next in the future if she has already worked for them.

If you have two young people who have exactly the same credentials but one has some experience, and may be able to to get a good reference, I know who I would employ.

I agree that would be the case, if she had stuck to the original shift times. It shows the OPs DD was willing to put real hard work in.

Having a parent phone up to comment about the hours will have done her no favours. I know if I was the manager I wouldn't be hiring her because of it.

No she wouldn't. It would be illegal for her to work that shift pattern.

Doesn't mean she wouldn't have worked it though does it??

Does it not show willingness getting up at 5am to go out to work?

Or willingness to work, knowing that the job is only for a couple of weeks. A lot of 16 years olds wouldn't be bothered.

God help anyone who would come and work for you then!

I called up and ASKED if the the shifts were correct, I DIDNT comment on the rights and wrongs of them.
