I just find it much easier to put the card in the machine - if it does not work change it for a visa/mastercard - simples!

Indeed. Asking a cashier is a bad idea from experience. There's been a couple of places where I hadn't used my card because when I'd asked they said they didn't take it, when in reality the cashier didn't know and just said no when in reality they did. The retailer not displaying the Amex logo doesn't mean much either, half of my local businesses don't display the logo but pretty much all take it.

I've also been to one or two places that don't take the chip on the amex but where it will work via the magnetic stripe (Its only happened a couple of times in the UK, but can be very common in some countries). So if the terminal tells you to swipe the card after inserting it, it doesn't mean that Amex isn't accepted. My local wilkinsons used to be like this.

A lot of places won't swipe cards now as a matter of course. One retailer I worked for years ago made it policy not to swipe cards even if the EPOS asked for it.

From experience, either the retailer knows their point of sale won't take the chip on Amex and is fine to swipe it or its customer facing terminal and once the receipt has printed out they don't really care.

I have a couple of US debit/credit cards and have never really had any problem with them being swipe/sign or chip/signature in recent years. The first couple of years chip and pin was around in the UK, things were much much worse.

Its silly not to swipe a card when the EPOS tells you too, by this point the machine will send a fallback flag along with the transaction (Telling the bank the chip couldn't be used due to a technical problem with the chip), when this happens the retailer is no longer liable for the transaction, some banks automatically decline this types of transactions.

Company where i used to work has stopped taking Amex - it was already higher interest charge than the others and it was due to go up again.
Maybe big retailers get a more favourable deal but it is expensive for small companies to accept.
  • Ikea - I used my amex there in June 2015 and it worked fine.

I've noticed that some retailers don't accept amex using "contactless" but it will work if you insert the card (Gregg's for example). Amex must use a different type of "contactless"???
