Ah, thats sounds like a temporary thing. My local one stopped taking it for a day or two on their new machines (But still had one of the old machines in the back room in case anyone wanted to pay by Amex) and then the new machines were updated.

If the Pizza hut had the Amex logo on the door, refuse to pay in future, another pizza hut nearby has the logo up on the door, told me I couldn't pay with it at the end of the meal, I said I won't be paying with any other means (The manager agreed it was unacceptable and also said he'd get the issue resolved ASAP) and they gave me the meal for free. It's not your problem if they say they take a payment method and then don't! Its no different than being in a foreign airport, them saying that take £s in addition to local currency and then at the end of the meal, say you can't pay with it.

All Post Offices now take Amex.

i tried it when paying Car Tax for my girlfriend the other day, and wondered whether postage would still not be payable by Amex, but yesterday i posted 14 parcels and paid the bill on Amex:T...which suits me nicely cashback-wise.
only places i can't use Amex now are Car Insurance (NFUMutual), Council Tax and our Hairdresser.
with changes at CapitalOne, if i wind up with only Amex as a spending card, having always had a non-Amex backup, i'll be comfortable with that.

I noticed even the contactless works with Amex at the post office which I find quite rare for new amex merchants, usually takes them a year or two to sort out the contactless side of things for Amex.

You should be able to pay your council tax bill at least at the post office using your Amex card.

If it has a barcode the post office will be able to scan it and accept payment, for councils that don't issue a bill with a barcode you should be able to call them up and ask for a payment card which the post office will be able to swipe and once again take payment via your Amex.

Whilst it may be possible to pay your council tax at the post office using a credit card without extra charge, for most authorities I believe it's cash only when paying CT at the PO (or paypoint store)

Whilst there may be some variations on what authorities print on their bill / website the system when making a payment at the post office is that you are actually making a payment direct to post office ltd who then settle the your account centrally.

For example to pay your council tax bill by cheque at the post office, the cheque is always being made payable to 'post office ltd' rather than the name of your local authority.

I can confirm that I have been able to pay my bill via Amex at a PO counter for Leeds City Council.

There is nothing within the till system at the PO that appears to block credit cards based on transaction type (currently) so it is worth those keen on points/cashback collection with Amex giving it a try.

thank you blenz. i have a card for my Council Tax, which I know they no longer issue. i think my bills have a barcode, so i will try to pay it at the Post Office with my Amex card in 10 days or so.:money:
