I've tried this using my work Amex...
It caused the restaurant's till to freeze and then crash.
Rather embarrassing with a sizeable queuejonesMUFCforever wrote: »I just find it much easier to put the card in the machine - if it does not work change it for a visa/mastercard - simples! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I tried using my Amex in Specsavers Wokingham and they said they did not take it.0

tried to pay for Direct Line motor insurance with Amex. They no longer accept it.GiftBaskets4Baby.com - from Heart to Heart0

Why would anywhere take AMEX. What do the retailers get out of it apart from higher fees?
I found their advertising not long ago for small business week or whatever it was a bit strange. Small businesses are least likely to want someone paying with AMEX as it would get into their profits too much.
Unless that was the idea.0 -

Amex pushes the idea of its customers being bigger spenders, on average.
Personally, I'm keen to spend on my Amex but I always bring a backup card with me (as every other Amex customer out there), so I never dropped a purchase after being refused my favourite card.0 -

And yet many small businesses do take Amex.
I live in a village. The Butcher, the Post Office, the Garden Centre, and the Farm Shop in the next village all take Amex. My dentist in the small town 2 miles away takes Amex.
I got £25 cash back from Amex during the small business promotion. It was the first time I had used the village butcher or the farm shop in the next village, but I was very impressed with both of them and will use them regularly from now on.
So there are two small businesses which may never have got my business if they had not taken Amex.0 -

Probably mis sold the concept that if they take AMEX they would get loads of extra custom from far and wide. This has already been confirmed as not the case on here as everyone has a backup card should a retailer not take AMEX.0 -

Well I don't know how much extra business Amex generates, but I will now be a regular customer of two small shops which I would never have tried if Amex had not been promoting them, so without a doubt Amex generates some new business!0
