Has anyone else noticed trouble with some online retailers with AMEX? I had trouble buying some speaker cables; it kept being declined due to "security checks". After speaking to the (very helpful) website they said it was because Amex doesn't use 3d secure that a lot of fraudsters try to use AMEX cards more... does anyone know if there is truth in this?
    cheers!
Yes it's true. Amex don't use 3d system. This give you a password for online purchase. So if you loss your card 3rd party will not know your 3d key. With Amex this is not possible.

But with the other two, they can recreate it as long as they know your DOB.

    Very secure, eh?

That's why more online places prefer non Amex cards. In case if you loss your card it is unlikely outside will know your DOB and the postcode.

On a side note, why do people not accept AMEX? Is it the costs involved to the company so it's cheaper? I think I remember hearing that somewhere...

Been a fact for years that Amex charges higher merchant rates than visa etc. Some years ago their rate was around 4%. So many volume businessess never took it on board.
  • Does RUSH HAIR in London accept Amex? Nice discount atm.

    Thanks :)

I know you hate American Express but you really do need to do your research before posting negative comments about them. They do have 3D Secure, called Safekey.

I don't hate amex so don't tell me what I am thinking. My point is that master and visa are better and foe most people sending of around £20000 A year cash back cards are better.
The safe key is not same as the 3d, it is only used by a very few website, mainly due to the cost. 3d is a separate ro the website so no cost.

Total rubbish - it's exactly the same system. I'm pretty sure that they just licensed the technology from Visa :D

EDIT: They did indeed licence it from Visa - http://about.americanexpress.com/news/pr/2010/safekey.aspx

Add Virgin holidays to the no pile.

Their site seems to suggest that they do? I'm sure that with the Virgin Atlantic AmEx you get a discount when you pay using it so it'd be a bit odd if they didn't accept the card!
We accept Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Switch, Delta and Solo. Please note for payment by credit card there is a surcharge of 2.5% (no charge for debit card). This will be automatically added to the deposit amount required.
