Yes you can, I always use AMEX for Oyster and national rail.

We are off to Venice next week and was wondering when we pay for items/food etc with AMEX does it exchange euros to dollars first then dollars to sterling?

According to the terms and conditions on the back of the statement, they do indeed convert euros to dollars, and then dollars to sterling - and then add a fee of 2.73% (which is increasing to 2.99% as of 1st February).

All foreign currency charges have been converted into Pound Sterling on the date we processed the Charge. Non U.S. dollar
Charges have been converted through U.S. dollars, by converting the Charge amount into U.S. dollars and then by converting
that U.S. dollar amount into Pound Sterling. U.S. dollar Charges have been converted directly into Pound Sterling.

Thinking of applying for the Amex card, one of our major spending habits is holidays - can you use Amex on sites like ebookers, opodo, expedia etc.
and if so do they charge extra if you do?

Also, what is the experience when it comes to credit limits offered. To earn the maximum £200 cashback during the intro period I would need to be offered at least £1,500 a month limit. Is this likely (I have a good credit history and decent income).

I think Amex are the most expensive credit card to use abroad and as they convert into US dollars before UK pounds, this only adds to the cost.

Anyone else had their APR increased to 19.9% ? I had a letter today increasing my APR on both my Platinum and Blue credit cards.
  • from 13/1 ticket machines (london kings cross) don't accept amex. That's really annoying. Called Amex and they confirmed but they don't know if this is permanent. They will call me back....which makes me think that it is permanent...time for a change...
