I'm still in a quandary over this ECO boiler scheme. I have had to demand from N Power a copy of the conditions. They initially wanted to tell me over the phone what they were and for me to agree them. Now they keep ringing me up wanting a date to start.
The conditions look OK, but I am still very suspicious that someone wants to fit a new boiler, put a new flue in, carry out all of the remedial work and take 2 days to complete the job for NOTHING.

Since when were people or companies in this country willing to do a job and provide all of the materials and not expect someone to pay? Honestly I'm frightened to death that I am going to end up owing thousands because I missed some small print or something.

I really need some reassurance please

I'm naturally very suspicious of a 'good deal'!

I contacted npower about 8 weeks ago about a new boiler and after having one of their agents come along followed by Vibrant Energy Matters a few weeks later I am told that I can have a new boiler fitted FOC. Wow, then the doubts set in. Everything has been carried out over the phone, so I asked for written confirmation together with the terms & conditions. Nothing has yet arrived.

I'm probably paranoid but you do hear of these scams although I was assured that it will not cost me a penny.

Green Deal keeps being mentioned, but ECO is the one I am told is actually involved.

Have I got anything to worry about? Or am I being set up to be scammed?

Has anyone heard of this company? I had a man knock on my door today offering free cavity wall insulation. Apparently it is Government backed. He has made an appointment to call back in a couple of days to drill a couple of holes in the walls to check if there is any insulation which I don't think there is. I can then get free insulation. I have looked on their website and they look okay but like to check on MSE regarding any of these offers, so would be grateful if anyone has any info on them good or bad. Thank you.
  • Hi All,
    Just to mention my experience:
FYI: It would seem that 'broken' boilers, even if 'relatively' new, don't count.
ie, The assessment gives a boiler efficiency rating assuming all is working correctly.

I have some serious health issues, and am on qualifying benefit.
My boiler is almost ten years old, but it is a combi condensing boiler.

The reason I contacted the assessment company, was that the boiler is leaking water quite badly, ie unusable = no central heating & no hot water, (6x months now, since January this year).
This was made clear to the assessor.
On receiving their 'judgment', there was no mention of this problem in his report, hence no boiler needed.
On contacting the company, their reply was that (using the efficiency codes), my boiler was sufficiently energy efficient, and therefore did not warrant replacment. My question to them was, 'How can a boiler be energy efficient when it is leaking water all over the floor, and is therefore unuseable?'
Reply: (repetition of their original statement ie, 'computer says no').
After going around in circles several times with 'computer says your boiler is efficient', I said, 'so what you are saying is there is no recognition for broken boilers in the qualifying criteria?', she said, 'Yes, you are correct'.

Anybody got any experience of this, or advice?
    Thanks.

British gas are going to fit my boiler next week
Odd thing is I was told on the phone that my contribution would be £250 but today when the surveyor came to asses my house, the contribution shot up to £453.57, is this normal or should I shop around?

You need to ask them for a break down of costs, ring them and find out why the price has increased..

The amount available to pay for the boiler from house to house subject to the amount of carbon savings. And the amount paid per unit of carbon saving also varies every fortnight and the amount of work involved in fitting also varies from house to house so a 'free' boiler can typically vary from £0 to about £1k

  • Hi.I am new to the forum, and not sure we're to post a question.I own my own house and I am in full-time employment. I have an old back boiler that needs replacing.can I get help with the cost or do I need to be on benefits to get any help thanks
  • Hi, i have just had an engineer round to do a survey for a free boiler, i receive child/working tax credits. i was told that i would need to install a loft ladder as my boiler is in the loft. he also informed me that they need a contribution of between £250-£500 for them to carry out the work. There is no additional work to carry out apart from changing the boiler so i am unsure what the contribution is for. i thought it was a free boiler scheme if i qualified. can anyone explain this to me please?
  • Hi,
British Gas have an offer on at the moment for Gas boilers fully fitted for only £250(including Vat), subject to qualification and survey.
I filled in the online application form (I am on Pension credits and my boilers 37years old, this qualified me for a new boiler) British gas arranged for a surveyor to call on the 3rd July. He arrived on the 3rd; he checked my relevant paperwork and the carried out the survey.
The surveyor then entered the information into his i Pad, he then told me that funding for the gas boiler would be £373.86 and that my contribution towards the boiler would be £1267.70(which includes Vat) as you can see nothing like £250 fully fitted as advertised on their website.
The new boiler will go where the old one is and there is no extra work regarding the plumbing and electrics so why the extra £1017.70
Surely this is a contravention of the Trades Description Act
