Just looking for a bit of help.

I own my own house and my household income falls within the right amount and I receive the right benefits. However the mortgage and deeds are in a joint name with my ex partner as the mortgage company won't take him off. He does not live there and Tax Credits have done all their credit checks etc and are satisfied that he no longer lives there. Will this joint name stop me from qualifying?

    Thank you.

Technically they need everyone mentioned on the title deeds to sign the relevant documents. They may or may not ask for both of you to sign, but they should.

But other than that there should be no issue.

  • I've just a a guy call round my house with apparently a completely FREE offer for external wall insulation! I think it's too good to be true and therefore it probably is!! However, I'd like to get other peoples views or whether other people have heard of this company and what (if any) the catch is.

    His claim:

The gov will provide up to 75% or up to £6,000 towards the cost of work. This company - Save Britain Money Energy Services - will then pay the remaining 25% to complete the work. The house is effectively "wrapped" in layer of insulation attached to the outside of the home, covered with a protective mesh and then rendered from a wide choice of colours and finishes.

Is it possible for this to be free to me? Is it that the gov's "green programs" force the companies to do this and thus that's why it's free? Or is it more likely that the total cost is much more than the £6,000 + whatever the company are willing to contribute and I have to pay the rest / balance?

Your thoughts / knowledge would be very welcomed!!
  • Goldie1977,

I have just signed up for this deal with Save Britain Money. From what I understand you can apply for 75% of the total cost from the government upto a maximum of £6000. SBM charge you £8000 to have the work done. The grant for the work will get paid to into your bank account and then it is upto you to pay SBM the £6000. If you pay them that money within 7 days of the work being completed then they will 'give' you an 'early repayment discount' of £2000. Therefore the total cost for all the work is £6000 which is covered for by the grant.
SBM own the company who will do the insulation work, therefore because they are not subcontracting any of the work out their costs are a lot lower than standard - which is where they make their money. I think it costs SBM £2000-£3000 to do the work but they get the £6000 grant.
There are a couple of things we need to pay for, example they would install new uPVC windowsills, however I would quite like to keep the original stone windowsill so i would need to pay for the extra work. Also the pillars in my window bay need repair, which they will do for me - as long as i pay the extra for the work!

The sales man who knocked on my door was rubbish, the call centre chap was rubbish, however the surveyor who did my EPC was really good and explained the whole process very clearly and knew his stuff. I have applied for my grant from the .gov website and when my arrives (via email) usually within 5 days, i then contact SBM who will send out the project manager to talk through the technical details and show me my options for finishings to the outside the house.

My biggest concern is i have no examples of the quality of work from this company. I have taken a bit of a gamble on that!

Does anybody know what happened to CERO on July 1st? There was supposed to be some new developments.

No news yet, we have just been told before the house of commons summer recess which is 22 July.

This is the page to keep an eye on.

    Thanks for the link.

I phoned a CWI company this morning who did say they can offer part grants, e.g. £150 for CWI (after grant). Is this consistent with what you understand is currently offered by CERO?

    Yes that sounds about right.

I live in Northumberland and have just been told this scheme has ended. Can anyone verify this please?
NPower and SSE are still running the free boiler scheme. Eon are only doing it for boilers which have broken down. The others have met their targets for the time being so aren't doing any as far as I know.

So looks like the CERO consultation published today upholds the decision to include easy to treat CWI in CERO.

Does that mean I can find an installer note, or will it take weeks/months for this info to permeate?

Now this has been clarified, you need to keep you eye on this website.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/eco-brokerage-results

This is where all the ECO money is traded (anomalously) and the results publicly available.

For HHCRO the price needs to hit around 14p to cover the cost of most boilers and make it worthwhile to do.

For CERO and CSCO it needs to get close to £100 before you start getting free installations again on the majority of properties.

It will probably be 4-6 weeks before any money gets through at the earliest.
