I applied for ECO through EDF and was told that I qualify for help. The lady on the phone said that they wouldn't be able to replace our 35 year old boiler because it is floor standing and they only replace wall-mounted boilers. She said the additional installation work would cost too much but I have read on this forum about people having boilers relocated before. I offered to contribute some/all of the additional cost but apparently that can't be done. I am shocked about this policy - has anyone else come across this?

I phoned British Gas but they said they have met their quota for the year and won't be able to do anything until 2015. I suppose that is the end of the line for them.

I will try another provider tomorrow to see what they say.

After a wait of 23 days since British Gas came out to do our survey we get a call........... This is what they said......... After having a survey done by one of our surveyors we would like to make an appointment for Wednesday 7th May to come and fit your new free boiler! RESULT!!!!! Will keep you posted!!!

For all of you that have been following my posts since December when our old boiler popped. British gas came and fitted our new Vaillant Eco Tech plus condenser boiler, the contractors were pleasant, friendly, efficient and very clean and tidy. We could not be any happier with the service British Gas gave us after being turned down twice by 3rd party companies offering free replacement boilers. When the fitters left us at 2.30pm we were told to let the system run for a coulple of hours to make sure it was ok. (Luckily it was a wet chilly day today) The fitters even rang us at 5pm to check all was well. The best part is we did not have to pay a penny towards our boiler it was all FREE with a 2 year warranty too. So if any of you are having problems through 3rd party companies i.e boilergrants.co.uk or anyone else offering free boilers, forget them, ring the energy advice centre and go with British Gas...excellent efficient service all round. A very happy customer here :j

Back in February this year I applied for a free boiler (following MSE advice) by contacting the Energy Saving Advice Service - a bit of a long winded process (20 mins on phone) but eventually got there and then waited for British Gas to make contact.
A few weeks later we had a letter from the Energy Saving Advice Service saying that we didn't qualify - after a quick call to them they agreed that we did qualify and that British Gas would surely make contact soon - which they did, promising that a surveyor would call us to make an appointment.
Now, some 5 weeks later, British Gas have just called us.. blaming the government for changing the "rules" and advising that we did not now qualify for any help with a new boiler!

We are now back to square one! I don't know if I should try again for this "free help" - or start looking elsewhere for something that we can't afford but desperately need, along with the associated risks of a low cost solution?

See my post below....British gas have just fitted our boiler today free of charge. Are you on benefits of any kind? I.E child tax credits, disability, jsa or is you income below £15,000 if so there is no reason why you shouldnt qualify. Re apply or get them to check you original application, someone on here was told similar but had their application re checked to find out there was a mistake and they did qualify....worth a shot....Good Luck

Hi everyone:) first post. Saw the MSE header page concerning free boilers and checked it out. Filled out the online form with my energy supplier after checking eligibility criteria. Received reply within two days to say I didn't qualify (cynic in me would guess standard ploy).
Rang this morning to suggest I did qualify and after some time 'on hold' it appears someone 'misread' my online application.
So awaiting next step of confirmation letter regarding assessment.
Was strongly implied that boiler wouldn't be free unless my existing one is broken but am aware of scheme rules and unfortunately for the company I presently have a fair amount of time on my hands.
    Will update as events unfold.
Just a quick update - energy survey carried out yesterday - took about an hour. They didn't give much away as to findings but we remain optimistic.

My 25 year old boiler was floor standing and not broken but inefficient. I went with N Power and it was replaced with a wall mounted boiler in the same area. No cost to me and new cylinder for water, all the electrics, pipes etc. The wall where the old one was vented outside was all re-bricked. Very professional job all round despite numerous phone calls and a 5 month period from start in July to completion in December.

Mine was a floor standing one, too. New wall-mounted boiler was re-sited 2 floors up and at the opposite side of the house.

Right my mum only receives pension credits and has been applying for a free boiler. She lives in privately rented accommodation so ticks all the boxes.

SSE came and eventually after having lost her application(!) then said she would have to contribute £700!!!! Another company came and have done the assessment but not yet replied. Another energy supplier rang her and said she would get it but had to contribute £1200!

Honestly has anybody genuinely had a free boiler and only had to pay a nominal amount for say new radiators etc. To be honest, I think this whole scheme is a rip off and it is disgusting that it is getting the hopes up of people who cannot afford a boiler. I am so fed up with the liars, Bullsh*tters etc!!!
    Mortgage from £100,400 to currently £77,100 in 7 years:beer:
Starting 2014 goal of seriously cracking my debt! If I wouldn't buy it full price - why bother in the sale :rotfl::money::T:j
  • Yes.
Applied to EON who sorted it all out with a Sheffield firm ( JJ Crump ) who were excellent.
I went from an 11 year old Baxi back boiler to an Ideal logic ( which is excellent ) re-sited in the old airing cupboard.
I was told nothing to contribute but decided on new double radiators in the bedrooms as the others were 30 years old which I did pay for.
