I think over half a million homes (just in its first year) would question that ECO 'may as we'll not be there', ECO is a good scheme and it is helping 100s of thousands of vulnerable households to significantly reduce their energy bills. your house being cold is obviously not the loft insulation so why takeaway perfectly good loft insulation and then replace it with new, loft insulation doesn't really have a shelf life as long as it is not damaged.

I am talking about my loft insulation 'May as we'll not be there' not the ECO. As I have said the loft insulation has massively churned up damaged pieces. The whole point of the ECO as you say is to help vulnerable households reduce energy bills - I guess a freezing house and damp, therefore higher energy bills, black mould problems etc don't make me remotely in need of even friendly advice.

I work hard, pay for everything myself and was simply enquiring about whether I'd be eligible for an available scheme (there generally aren't any unless you get benefits of some sort) or any other helpful suggestions about how to try and sort my problem. If I had no 'moral conscious' I'd have just done it but I've actually tried to ask a question and wish I'd never bothered

I have just had one done - I have half-baked insulation, done by the donkey that I bought the house from.

British Gas contacted me and I had the no-obligation survey done. Now I am self-employed but don't qualify for the free service as I guess there is existing insulation there and they will be adding to it (but will check next month when I am able to plan to potentially out money aside for it).

Have the no obligation survey done and see what they say but be prepared for them to say you WON'T get it for free.

I need to weigh up what additional costs I may face (crawl boards in the loft, where to store what's there already as the documentation says not to store anything else in there) etc and see if the additional cost of maybe having crawl boards placed/fixed in the loft is worth it but you never know until you ask.

I thought I'd just register the progress of my CWI install post the April 1st changes...

I had three installers survey the house. I'm glad I did (despite one installer saying I "only needed one installer because it's all covered under the grant"). One mis-identified a wall as requiring filling, when it already had insulation. Another didn't even know about the grant changes!

I settled on one and was booked in for April 17th. I just heard that this has been cancelled because the big energy companies have asked for deprived areas to be treated first, and we are not in such an area.

Anybody heard anything about this? Am I being fobbed off? Sounds a bit strange, because shouldn't those areas be treated under CSCO instead?

Yes you would qualify for CERO post the 1st April changes, however since the changes no money has yet been agreed to be released to installers... due to the way the money is released the next date money may or may not be available is the 24th April the big six have to meet their annual obligations so money will be released eventually...

UPDATE - I have had a phone call this week to confirm installation of a new boiler (EDF/Dyson) on 24th April. Boiler will be re-sited in the airing cupboard, with pipework being run up the front of the house and in under floor of bedroom and landing. Dyson have said all associated costs will be covered and there will be nothing extra to pay.

If all goes to plan, the process will have taken 8 months.

I'm still waiting for British Gas to call back in the evening.

They've called once when we were out, and multiple times in the afternoon (not evening as I've requested)

I should have just put my mobile number in.....

Does anyone know the number to call them ?

number to book with bg is 0800 078 3414. i rang them to book rather than doing the call back thing and got straight through.

from reading the replies on here it would seem this is possibly a big con for most people if they will not top it up for free!

i was asked on the phone if i had any insulation in the loft already and i said yes but was not sure how much. the bg guy managed to look up my epc online and informed me that it was 100mm so i could still be eligible. they have booked my survey for may.

if they now come and tell me its not free due to existing insulation i will be pretty annoyed as they knew full well when booking exactly how much i had!

i am not paying to insulate my loft as according to energy saving trust and my epc it would only save an additional £14 per year to bring it up to the recommended amount.

just in case they will do it- does anyone have any further details of this £150 to clear your loft? and how it works?

my loft is full of stuff left by previous owner and resembles a builders yard! also, my entire loft, approx 30sqm, has been boarded with proper floorboards with two nails in every single joist  so it would take me days to pull them up myself! if i got £150 i could be tempted to lift them myself (or may just get someone to do it!) :)

I haven't heard from them at all... and as I've been off work since I applied, I'd have noticed if they had called...

Ive been on the EST website and apparently we do qualify for a free boiler.

What is the role of the EST? Is it not better to just go direct to the companies??
