Ahh yes I do - they'd just be adding to it...

To qualify for the grant your going to have to have less than 100-150 mm existing insulation (depending on other factors in the house) but for the grant to cover the full cost of the install in most cases you are going to have to have less than 60mm

Has anyone else had problems with government backed cavity wall insulation? My house now has internal damp patches due to problems with the workmanship of the insulation company but the company went into administration. Any advice please would be welcome.

A requirement of being a company which is certified to do the work through green deal and eco is to have insurance which covers all works for the 'lifetime' of the installation even in the case of the company going bust. No idea how you would find info on the insurance though... A option could be to go to their accreditation (maybe Stroma or NES) and they may be able to help you

many thanks for your reply. i'm hoping to get loft insulation and poss a new boiler, i'm in a bungalow that we bought last april that had been empty for some years prior to that and the previous occupier had been in care so any offers for improvements had been missed.the loft insulation is non-existent in places and being a bungaow all heat is lost very rapidly.
shall persevere after your reply hopefully with luck..

You should be able to get an ECO grant to pay for the loft insulation, if youve got some but its just bits dotted about you'be be better to just take this out and they should install 300mm new all the way throughout the loft for free.

With the new boiler you should have no problem getting this through he green deal, also if you meet the criteria for affordable warmth you could get quite a bit knocked off too or maybe even free.

Right that makes sense. When I bought the house the owner had just had it done and given the rest of the hash he made of various home "improvements" it wouldn't surprise me if he had half a job done to make it more saleworthy.

I will call them anyway though because I will still need to have some means of access to the loft and the paperwork seems to think that boarding won't be included or that crawlboards will need to be installed in the loft which will add to the expense and makes it less attractive!

I bought my home last year and over this winter I have been having penetrating damp problems - I think from the guttering/a couple of cracked roof tiles from the bad weather. I've been in the loft to check the roof lining but I can't take a proper look due to the existing insulation. I have never seen so much insulation in my life - it just seems like layers and layers piled on top of each other and i've just discovered further bits still wrapped in paper underneath the laid stuff. You cannot see the rafters! Some is churned up and provides no coverage. I need to try and clear other bits of rubbish out - left behind by previous workmen.

Have read today that too much insulation can cause/contribute to penetrating damp problems with hte top floor of a house. My bedroom (where the walls are having the damp problems) is cold all the time. I need to rectify the water coming in but to do this I need to get full access into the loft and be able to fix any problems with the liner but now i'm thinking the existing insulation is contributing and not proving the benefits it should be.

If I remove this would I then qualify for the British Gas free insulation?

Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy query

To qualify an assessor comes out and does a EPC if this recommends loft insulation you will qualify. I guess it's up to your own moral conscious if you want to waste the ECO pot in this way. Also you don't have to go to british gas you can go to any green deal installer for the free insulation.

The existing insulation could be blocking ventilation through the loft space which could cause issues with damp, if this is the case it's a pretty easy fix.

Seems strange as British Gas sent out a surveyor, we chased them up a week later, was informed that they'll let us know an installation date, when the installer informs them. A week later we chased them up again, they were about to give us an installation date then the guy turned around and said oh there seems to be a problem your boiler is D rated we only fit boilers to replace E,F and G rated boilers. So pippin18 I'd double check as you could be wasting your time like us, as our boiler packed up and was condemned by a gas engineer, so we have no hot water or heating for 4 weeks and have two young girls.

EDF told us from the start over the phone, that they would not install a boiler as they only change E,F and G rated boilers. It all seems one massive con, that these big companies send out a surveyor only for all this work to be done and weeks later be told that as we have a D rated boiler we don't qualify. We told them over the phone at the start what boiler we had, so why did the surveyor come out, why could they not say from the start sorry but your boiler is D rated and we do not change them? I would not be surprised that the big companies are cashing in by sending out their surveyors to do these surveys knowing full well like in our case that there is no chance that we would be successful in getting our broken boiler replaced, where as it is government funded they are charging a fair bit for the surveyors work. To me they are using this to line their own pockets and the money is not really being funded to it's maximum potential, for those that really need it. How else can you explain why they send someone out and weeks later be told no sorry, when like EDF they tell you from the very first phone call.

Anyone with a D rated boiler had any luck? Anyone in the Devon area had any luck?[/QUOTE

Some interesting comments here! Our surveyor was pretty adamant that we would get a boiler, so yes it will be interesting to see what happens and if any one else with a D rated boiler has managed to get a replacement. In my opinion I think the scheme is all wrong, if you have a boiler that is working and you are happy with it why would you need a replacement, whereas myself and shaneybaby55 along with 100's of other people on low incomes who have no boiler/heating/hotwater cant get one? I thought the scheme was to help people like us????

As soon as I know the outcome of todays visit, as to whether we do get a free boiler or one we have to contribute to I will let you all know so WATCH THIS SPACE!
No, it is nothing to do with we who are poor or on benefits or a hard up pensioner. It is all about this Global Warming/Climate Change con, and the Government wanting to win the low carbon emission prize. We must be Green,Green,Green. After all, we must be scared of something. Think back,,,AIDS, Sarrs, Asian Flu Bird flu. It is a wonder any of us are still alive!!!!! This Co2 con is only the latest.....but if some of us can benefit....bring it on!

I'm still waiting for British Gas to call back in the evening.

They've called once when we were out, and multiple times in the afternoon (not evening as I've requested)

I should have just put my mobile number in.....

Does anyone know the number to call them ?

Thanks for questioning my moral conscious and suggesting I'm wasting the ECO pot for making a query about some loft insulation that may as well not be there. I'm just trying to make my home warm and energy efficient after having a damp freezing winter. Suggestions as to how do it are gratefully received. Sarcastic remarks are not. Thanks for your time anyway

I think over half a million homes (just in its first year) would question that ECO 'may as we'll not be there', ECO is a good scheme and it is helping 100s of thousands of vulnerable households to significantly reduce their energy bills. your house being cold is obviously not the loft insulation so why takeaway perfectly good loft insulation and then replace it with new, loft insulation doesn't really have a shelf life as long as it is not damaged.
