Hi, with a savings score of 876 at the current prices being paid to installers its not going to be close to paying for a new boiler. I think you'd be very fortunate to be able to get a new boiler without having to make a contribution.

We really dont understand the ECO emmissions scoring, can you explain in simple terms please? this scoring was taken from the 1st survey we had done in Jan, with a company we are not using, we haven't had a EPG from the 2nd company or British Gas who came out today. Why arent companies not mentioning that you need a score of 900+ to qualify for a free boiler on their websites or when they come to do a survey? Instead of saying CONGRATULATIONS you qualify for a free boiler when you fill in the initial questionaire..its very misleading!

The ECO score comes from a calculation based on the information gathered for the EPC. The details of your house as it currently is are entered into the software, along with what improvements/measures that have been selected. The software then shows a 'lifetime savings score' for each individual measure that has been selected.

Then a price is paid per unit of this score to the installer on completion.

Companies can pull off the information from the original survey off the database so don't have to do another one but some companies choose not to do this.

I don't know why companies aren't telling customers that it is subject to a survey but they probably should be.

You do still qualify for a grant for a new boiler, if you let me know some details about your heating system I could give you a more info if you are likely to be able to get a boiler for free or not. So, boiler make/model, combi/system, do you have tvr valves etc.

thank you ...our boiler is a 21 year old Potterton (thorn emi) apollo, not a combi boiler, British gas surveyor said it would be exchanged like for like i.e we would not get a condenser or combi boiler so we would continue to use the hot water tank, thermostat is in living room, no individual radiator valves. What else do you need to know?

Ok, just a couple more questions is the existing boiler on an outside wall, is there a drain near the boiler (sink, toilet etc) how far away is the gas meter and you probably won't know the answer to this but is the gas pipe 15mm or 22mm diameter.

hi yes the existing boiler is on an outside wall just to the right of the kitchen sink, the meter is about 2 ft away cant be exact on that as it depends on how you measure it. no dont kno the dia of the pipe sorry. British gas said it would be a like for like boiler i.e not a combi we would still use the hot water tank if that makes a difference. thank you

Based on what you have told me the job would probably cost around £1500-£2000 depending if you needed to run a new gas pipe or not for a like for like swap, and based on your savings score currently you could get around £650 so obviously way off. However the new obligations started 1 April so this means the price should go up we will find out on the 10th April whether it has or not and be able to pay for the full cost of the install and hopefully give you around £1,500 which should cover it if you didn't have to have to run a new gas pipe from the meter.

thank you you have been most helpful.. so if we have to pay anything towards it which it seems likely we will how does that work? \we obviously cant afford to pay upfront, so would it go thru the green deal scheme?

If you have to pay to top up the grant you can either do this through a green deal loan or a conventional loan if you talk to your installer or a green deal provider they should be able to give you a couple of options.

I think it would have to be green deal as neither myself or my partner are currently working (we are searching for work) no one would give us a conventional loan.

I still am a bit confused here as I have said this before I qualified for a new boiler as on small amount of pension credits my old boiler was 43 years old but it was still going strong.
I approached Northern Gas in Wolverhampton(I live in Durham) 6 weeks later boiler fitted Vaillant eco tec pro 28 all done and dusted and the house is as warm as toast.

    A very satisfied customer
