I privately rent and qualify for a free boiler - so I applied to British Gas who sent out an assessor - he agreed my boiler was borderline condem-able and told me it would be replaced withn about 6 weeks. That was in November. I rang British gas who explained they dont have any engineers now or in the foreseeable future and that was that.
    what can I do???

Try again mid-late april, all of the 2013 funding was spent shortly after you applied, a new round of funding starts this week and should be released towards the end of the month. You don't have to go to one of the big six for this, try a local green deal installer and they should give you more info and be a bit more informative.

  • My neighbors exactly the same ... I personally thought external gas pipes were a safety issue ... Thats the way its done though!! ...

This is just because its the cheapest way to do it, the money available to fit the 'free' boilers is pretty tight. However, if anyone didn't want the gas pipe on the outside of the house they should let the installer company know as soon as possible and you may have to make a small contribution for the extra work.

  • Hi all,

Just been told we qualify under the 'affordable warmth scheme' for a new boiler with Help Link. We are in Glasgow and are now waiting for an installation date. When they carried out the survey they told my wife we should get a fancy wireless control system and the whole thing would be £200. When I called to query if this was a blatant attepmt to 'up-sell' and ask could we just have the free boiler with the free control system they said the fee had been waived and we could now have it all for free. What is going on? To good to be true???

I'd love your help asap before I sign a binding contract.
  • I got in contact with a company called Affordable warmth 4 u after going onto their website (affordablewarmth4u.com) - they we're very friendly over the phone and explained everything that i needed to know, although i qualified for the boiler and the cavity wall/loft insulation as I claim the right benefits and privately rent - they informed me that if I hadn't of been claiming benefits I would have still been able to get the free insulation as my postcode is in a certain area.

I have had surveys done on the property for the boiler and insulation by smaller plumbing/heating/insulation companies who work with Affordable warmth 4 u and been told the work will be done in a couple of weeks.

I have had regular updates also off affordable warmth 4 u explaining the slight delays i had with the heating companies getting in touch with me due to funding, so would recommend going through them to get the work done :)

Hi, i can't see them listed on the green deal participants register. Is the company name different to their trading name? Because I would be wary of accepting any work under ECO from any company that wasn't accredited to do so

I too today rang energy saving advice, they took details and said we should hear from our energy supplier (British Gas) within 2 weeks, they have to get confirmation from DWP that we are on the benefit I said we were on. So hopefully after being turned down by a third party company after waiting 11 weeks only to be told they have no funding and we didnt qualify anyway, we will get good news. In the meantime we will continue without heating and hot water :(
For anyone who has been following my post! a brief recap...our boiler packed up on 8th December 2013, contacted Boilergrants.co.uk on 12th Dec, they sent surveyor on 13th Jan 2014 to do survey, was told would get a call in 7/10 days from installer, after 3 weeks and several phone calls we were told sorry you dont qualify for a free boiler you failed on the ECO emissions score (somethink we were never told about) we needed a score of 900+ we had 876. Said we could have boiler through green deal scheme... 2 weeks later they said sorry no funding available this was 16th Feb. they said new funding might be available in 6-8 weeks! and they would call us. I rang Energy advice centre, they took our details, said they had to check with DWP regarding our benefits and as soon as that was done British Gas would contact us hopefully within 2 weeks. British Gas did ring and said they had the information needed from DWP and a surveyor would call us to come out and do the required survey. BUT in he meantime while waiting for the surveyor to call a guy knocked the door regarding the green deal scheme said he could get a surveyor to come and do a energy efficiency report the next day, we said ok ...as we thought it would be interesting to see how this report compared to the one done in Jan by Boilergrants.co.uk. The surveyor said we would get a copy of the report in the post in 2 weeks time, that was 24th March, so 2 week deadline is not quite up but have checked online and its not there yet either. Anyway today (3rd April) British gas surveyor came out... he said hes recommending we get a new free boiler as we are a grade 1 - having 2 children, no heating or hot water. He said although our boiler is 21 years old and not working it would be classed as a grade D efficiency. He said according to the calculations we would only be saving £28 a year, which he said was rubbish, he also said he was pretty confident that we would not have to pay anything towards the boiler but couldnt guarantee it. He said you will get a call from an installer and your boiler should be fitted in the next 2 weeks! He had a call from an installer while he was still at our house and they were going to fit a boiler for a customer who's house he had surveyed last week! He said because we were without heat and hot water ours would be quick too as we were priority. So watch this space!!!! Is it all too good to be true??

Hi, with a savings score of 876 at the current prices being paid to installers its not going to be close to paying for a new boiler. I think you'd be very fortunate to be able to get a new boiler without having to make a contribution.
