    FREE BOILER FAILURE
    I applied to British gas for a free boiler (long standing customer of 40 years) and was told I qualified and a surveyor would come. After 3 months of waiting I contacted them to find out what was happening - they had taken down the address with the wrong road!!. Having got the right address their young surveyor came and took one look and said 'you are too high for us as you are on the second floor' and therefore we cannot install a boiler' - BG will not use any other scaffolding company other than their own - so can't even get my own scaffolding, so far nothing in writing just his sayso!!!.
    As a 64 years old with a heart condition this is really helpful.

    There are boilers with flues that can be installed from inside the property. Go back to BG and query this with them. If they will not provide one of these boilers then try another supplier.

    Just like everything in life. If you are on benefits you can get anything. If you are struggling to make ends meet on a low wage you are entitled to nothing.



    However, the person on whose post you are commenting says that the beneficiaries are two landlords. Those actually on benefits gained very little , but the landlords have free boilers.


    So, he is complaining about two people, who have means gaining (ie not on benefits), whereas someone just above the benefit level gets nothing (Paying for a boiler would make her worse off than someone on benefits).
  • Many thanks Harryo - Apparently BG do not now belong to the scheme so I have applied to both SSE and npower - will see how we get on.

After many phone calls and news that the boiler wasn't due until 16:30, through went to plumb centre and bought one. Within an hour and a half of it arriving I had heating and hot water.
    Only after I left dud I discover that they'd fitted an Idealogic 30, not the 35 stated. Rang the office but they had closed.
    Monday this week I rang to report the 'wrong boiler' fact. I was told they'd look into it and ring me back. No call back happened so rang late Monday and was told that the Heat output of the 30 and the 35 were the same, that it would only affect the hot water. I stated I'd been told I'd be fitted a 35 and as it had 12 rads running off it I felt the 35 was more appropriate. (Given the fact that a 35 had been taken out). At time of writing I'm still waiting for the promised callback regarding an engineer coming out to do a heat loss survey.


    So overall a good result, but watch this space...

    I posted the above....I'm still waiting for D J McGough to get back to me, despite having called them for an update. I'm being told the heat output is the same, but they fitted the wrong boiler and I was told trvs would be fitted/broken ones replaced. This didn't happen. I'm a bit lost as to what I can do next!

    Having read lots of the posts on the ECO scheme and picked up lots of Do's and Don't's - thanks guys - I am confused about the 'contribution' being charged.

    My parents have been accepted for a new boiler via EON - they are on pension credit, only have the basic pension as income and have an old old boiler. When they spoke to the installer they were told that they had to contribute £240. When they questioned this they were told that everyone pays it.

    I have read the leaflet, looked at various stuff online but can find no mention of what I assume is a standard fee. I have however found lots of info on here about some people being asked to contribute quite frankly ridiculous sums and then also a few who got it all free.

    My question is - Have other people been charged a standard fee and if so how much and did they question it? Also if anyone knows if the fee is being charged by EON or the installer?

    My parents know that even with the £240 fee this is a good deal but to be honest £240 is a lot of money for them. I'm also annoyed that there is no mention of this on any of the literature that I have looked at. (Yes I know that if extra works needs doing then a contribution has to be paid but the impression I have been given is that the £240 is payable by everybody).

    Has anyone had the boiler and work done totally free?

    I applied to N Power. I requested in June and had a brand new Worcester Bosh boiler fitted by mid August. I didn't have to contribute as it was a pretty straight forward swap.
    Really happy with the service we got. I'd try N.Power to see what they are offering. You don't have to go with the first company you apply to.

    Hello redbabe and it's good your parents qualify for a new boiler under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.

    Each application under ECO is dealt with on an individual basis. There aren't any set charges for additional work. Extra costs might apply[FONT=&quot] for things like safety work, pipework, scaffolding, extra radiators etc. It'll depend on the results of the initial assessment. We let customers know in advance if there are extra charges and what these costs are.
