    Hi Redkitty

I have sent you a PM about a company called Urban Renewable Power who are Sheffield based but do cover a large area. The rules for room in roof insulation have just changed so now rather than sliding up insulation between the tiles and sloping ceilings they have to overboard the slopes which is more costly and takes longer. They will cut new access hatches as part of the job. As of the 1st April the grants have also changed and more people on benefit are eligible for the higher grants. You can see if you are eligible by checking your benefits and income against our grant page. I can't post the link but if you Google for Happy Energy Free Boiler and follow the link to our webpage you will see the benefit criteria

any further questions please feel free to ask

Thanks so much Adrian - just called Urban Renewable Power and have a surveyor coming out to the house next week. Will let you know how I get on. I can't believe I could get this free, or even at a low cost! Thanks so much for your help! :j

Anyone else found a request for help with loft insulation falling on deaf ears?

I've been in touch with Nest Wales who were hopelessly unhelpful and Energy Saving Trust who seemed much more with it but after 3 calls over as many months checking to see what was happening nobody go back to me with any info?

I moved into my house in July last year and all was great until the cold weather hit. I have no idea why but the bedrooms were bitterly cold to the point where condensation inside the room was freezing on the walls, this bearing in mind was with the rad on full. It seems like the rooms are just haemorrhaging heat.

Because it's so cold I can't let my kids stop over at the weekends and that does get me down..

I think my only alternative is to try for a loan and get someone in to have a look and see what on earth is going on. As my luck would have it I bumped in to the previous tenants a few months back and they said it was easy for them to use £175+ a month in gas over the winters they were here.
  • Good morning
    I'm in South Derbyshire and moving into a bungalow soon which I have bought due to my disability. I am on ESA in the support group and the boiler needs replacing. I've had a brief look through the information people have posted and on the MSE pages but have been told that the funding has been stopped. This is the email;

Unfortunately, the company who we were working with in your local area no longer has access to the funding which is required in order to carry out the work. We're working hard to find another, but for the time being, we can not be of assistance. We're sorry we can't help you further.

This is through Boiler grants. org.
I've also contacted Npower Eon and one other but no reply as yet.

Can anyone help me with where to go to get a free boiler or at least a grant towards one. Many thanks in advance

Hello thomasbottom and I'm sorry you haven't had reply about your request for a new boiler yet. These requests are looked after by a specialist team who deal with all enquiries under the Government led Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. This includes help towards a replacement boiler.

How did you contact us about the scheme? There's an online application form through our website. Did you use this? These requests are usually answered in a couple of working days. If not, there's a number on this page you can call that goes straight to this team. Thought it might help to give you some general information about what's needed to qualify for a boiler replacement.

The existing boiler needs to be over 5 years old and either broken or not working properly. Your home must be owned or privately rented. There are certain qualifying benefits needed and these can be seen on our website too. We also need to know if you're not connected to mains gas and use liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or oil to heat your home.

Once we've received your application and spoken to you, we'll arrange a home visit where we'll go through things in more detail to see what energy saving stuff you're eligible for. Depending on the circumstances, there might be some extra charges you need to pay for things like safety work, pipework, scaffolding, extra radiators etc. Each application is looked at on an individual basis and we'll let you know in advance if there are any extra charges and what they are.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction thomasbottom.

Thanks Malc, yes it was through the webpage. I'll try the number you suggest. I did get through to the government number yesterday but have to call back with other info. Hopefully I will get somewhere soon!

My 16 year old boiler died a week ago. I have been in touch with two of the providers of the boiler grant scheme (boiler grant uk and another), like an earlier poster stated, I was also told that, even though it appears that I qualify, there was no provider in the area who will carry out the work (funding slashed, no one can afford to install). I live in West Sussex.

I have since been sent two two different agencies, I was told by boiler grant UK to:

"contact the government scheme directly on 0300 123 1234 for advice" ( this is for anyone else in a similar situation, in case they can help. I'll update at a later date once I know myself.)

and tried Charis. (Not sure really whether either can help).

I have heard nothing since from the government scheme, and received a generic letter from charis saying they were hoping to speak to EDF withing the next 8 weeks. I don't really know if and when to expect to hear from the government scheme directly.

My concern is that I've not really managed to find out if, and what assistance I can get. 8 weeks is a long time as a lone parent with no hot water and a 3 year old at home, though my bigger concern right now is that there is a very real possibility that no one can fund a replacement, and by waiting 8 weeks to hear one way or the other, after 8 weeks, the entire system wont have been used for such a period of time, there may at that stage be blockages in the water tank and pipework etc that I'll have to fund both the boiler repair and potential additional damage for having waited.

I'd really like to be able to speed up the process, or at least be able to speak to somebody who can tell me my options, or more concretely what I am both eligible for, and there is funding for, really a definitive so that I can make plans. I was hoping someone may know how I may be able to go about this, or have some info that may help me proceed in the best way.
  • Have you got any further with this, please?

I'm finding myself in a similar situation, which is the post directly above this.

I am about to move to a new house where the loft insulation is very minimal.

I struggle to find info online whether there is any scheme out there for people not on benefits and/or retired or close to that age. I am based on the outskirts of London/Kent borders if that matters.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.
