My symptoms were bad in my mid forties, doc said a few years early. I was upsets by it all and my friends were not having any symptoms at all. My children were younger and needed me to be capable , so it was right for me at that time. I feel like I bought myself a couple more years of feeling younger. Now in my fifties I don't feel so hard done by andi can just flap and fuss if I want to!Norn Iron Club member 4730

uuugh I hate the menopause. I has a hysterectomy at 28 and I'm 54 now. my remaining ovary packed in when I was about 42 and my life became a misery.
I was put on hrt and came off at 50 and it hit me again with a vengeance. I tried all sorts of herbal remedies and black cohosh damaged my liver. fortuantly this was caught before permanent damage was done so be careful.
I ended back on hrt as it was unbearable and embarrassing when in a meeting and a flush would hit. I was having to change the bed 2 and 3 times a night as the sheets would be sodden so sleep was terrible and DH wouldn't sleep apart.
My libido became non existent and unfortunately that never came back. Maybe we should start a support thread0 -
Hi,
My mum was also suffering with hot flushes, so I suggested a tea I found in James Wong's book, How to Grow Your Own Drugs. You use 1 raspberry leaf tea bag (get them cheap at 3 for 2 from Whittards) and a couple of sage leaves, leave to steap for a few minutes and drink 1 small cup. Be warned it does taste disgusting! But both my mum and her friend (who was suffering even though on hrt) found it worked pretty quickly.
I have read that raspberry leaf can induce pregnancy early so definitely Check with your doctor before taking herbal medicine
If they say it's fine though, I would recommend you try it. Hope that helps!0 -

I second a support thread!!
I am waiting for my chillow to come, and am going into town tomorrow as going to give the sage a try.
I can't belive how weepy I feel, as normally quite optimistic.
think I would rather as someone else on thread said go through puberty and pregnancy many times, than suffer from this, guys don't know how lucky they are!!i came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p0 -
Why would Mother Nature do this to us? She must have been having a seriously off day when she thought this was a grand idea.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

May I say now that I have never had a hot flush, I had the menopause when I was 54 and am now 63, I know I have been lucky.
I understand having HRT if you have the menopause when you are young, as it helps with bone density but don't see the point if it is for menopausal symptoms as surely they only come back when you stop taking it?(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

that's my main reason for not wanting to go down the hrt route, but the hot flushes though I have had them on/off last couple of years, have become so unbearable, hence seeing what other routes ladies have taken and found helped.i came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p0 -

I've been on HRT for a few years but will probably come off fairly soon. My doctor said that I would be on it until the average year women reach the menopause. Osteoporosis is a big problem in my family so that's why I take it.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

This isn't very MSE but if synthetic hormones aren't for you, there is also bio-identical hormone therapy, which has more of a 'natural' basis. I'm not menopausal but used them for another hormone disorder as I am very anti the synthetic kind. They really helped me personally.
Reading the book 'It Must Be My Hormones' by Dr Marion Gluck is at least a fairly inexpensive way to see if it is something that might be of interest (is on Amazon) But you can only get the bio-identical ones privately unfortunately, so not an MSE option as I said0
