Heavy car £50 and need to do 700 miles can I?

Car speedos can't under-read, but can over-read up to 10%. Run of the mill cars tend to go as near to that limit as possible to both flatter their drivers and screw up accurate fuel consumption (using the odometer).
I know indicated speeds are overestimated, but are odometer (distance) readings really commonly wrong by the same amount too?
I don't regularly check, but one long journey I do quite regularly is 192 miles according to Google maps and 193 miles according to my cars trip computer (I noted numbers down to monitor fuel economy once). Although I guess I've never checked that the trip computer matches the main odometer...0 -

If you're having to do 700 miles and you absolutely cannot find more than £50, I don't think driving (at least in that car) is for you. The ST TDCI can throw some scary bills with zero warning.
You missed the bit where the OP's non-weird husband challenged her to power the car by magic instead of using fossil fuels. If you read the thread there's always a logical explanation.0 -

You're probably spot on there.
Trucks have a tachograph/speedo which needs to be accurately calibrated every couple of years.
The test centres check the date sticker on the tachograph as part of the annual test.
I use my sat-nav speed to set my cruise control and find that loads of folks slow down to 65mph to pass speed cameras on 70mph limit dual carriageways.0 -
they should be limited to 56mph
Tescos, Morrsions and now sainsburys as well i think limit theirs to 40 on a single carriegeway...damn them! and 50 on other roads
They are just enforcing the speed limits, not imposing arbitrary lower ones. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Not according to https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits
Aren't trucks limited to 56 mph (90 kph) due to some EU regulation though? Or possibly just due to a continental speed limit to which the limiter is set and not disabled on UK roads?0 -

A lot on the continental trucks are certainly not limited, even if they should be.
Many a time I've been sat at 65+ (sat nav speedo) in the middle lane with the caravan on the back and had to pull over after passing other trucks in the inside lane, to then have a truck blast past a good 10-15 mph faster blowing me all over the road.0 -
enough about lorries, eh?
Well, OP...your remark about possibly having to 'drive like an old person' is a bit off, considering you have grand-kids?
Trouble is, the 'old people' actually long since got the message, so maybe they are truly worth emulating?
You state you have 700 miles to cover?
And only £50 to spare? [plus, whatever is in the tank..so that may be 60 or 70 quid's worth overall?]
Further back you posted how your intended mileage was made up?
Why not [for the duration?] simply re-arrange the schedule for the grand-kids?
Or....why not get onto something like Google, and see how many [shorter] routes are recommended for your journey?
Why not, indeed, book a Travelodge/Premier Inn [my choice].. room nearby mid-week, make one journey down, stop over nearby, then return for the weekend with the kids?
Don't think of driving like an old person...simply think [and find out how to] driving economically?
Try driving using your eyes, instead of technology?
Shed the passion for speed..you cannot afford it.
For around home, why not a bicycle? No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

Of course you were breaking the speed limit as well if you were doing 65 mph whilst towing a caravan.
