As an ex-rally driver pensioner I take offence at the OPs reference to 'drive like an old person'.

no need to 'take offence' there.....remember, the younger drivers still have to get to our level and age.....see what they think when they get there?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Any recall the first Daihatsu Charade?

The diesel doris version reputedly achieved 100mpg's....

I only managed about 500 miles for £50 in a diesel clio, mostly motorway/A roads, so I think the challenge is impossible (and is maybe the point). The only ways you'll manage are to use the car less or to cheat.

Not that it'll hurt to drive a bit more economically in future though :)

That would have been when manufacturers liked to quote the MPG at a constant 56MPG - before the EU brought in the 'urban' and 'extra urban' routes for the cars to complete, and the 'combined' figure that resulted from them. If you can find a Daihatsu Charade, I bet it won't get 100MPG even on the extra urban run...

That sounds like poor economy to me. 39-42MPG.

A Mondeo will easily beat that!!!

Perhaps it's lower as it is a company car and driven as such ;)
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

3 days in, run out of fuel yet OP? I highly doubt a Mondeo is capable of that return.

My 2.0 TDCi Mondy averaged 54 MPG over the time I had it, four years and 110k miles, including all kinds of driving, town, country, motorway.

I was usually to be found mixing it with the HGVs in the slow lane to get that however! It often returned 60 MPG plus on long motorway runs, measured accurately using an App on my phone, the computer tends to be ~10% optimistic and often told me I'd managed close to 70 MPG.

The worst return I ever got was just over 40 MPG when I tested how quickly I could to the 75 mile commute down the A1 one day.

Don't fill the tank, fuel is heavy. Half or less will help a bit.

No I am not trolling or long gone, just out enjoying the weather! geesh
OK< this is a better explanaition, he is American Military and gets very cheap fuel that is why I dont' pay for it, a fill up on base costs about £1.10 per GALLON that is why I have no idea of costs of UK fuel the last time I bought it was early 90's when I came back for a 2 week holiday (thankfully). If I was to loose my drivers licence though speeding or any other way for that matter I would no longer be able to drive on base as the car is in my name I am the only person that can use the fuel card as his vehicle is petrol.
This is the clincher and I don't care if you don't believe me but HE can get into trouble for this not just me, He is a guest in this country and has to be squeky clean otherwise he will loose some clearance levels and get sent back to the US. I know in the past they had a bad name for fighting in the pubs (Just like our lads in Germany and Gibralter, before anyone gets a holier than thou attitude ) but these days the US Government will have them shipped home before they have time to sober up!
No way does he expect me to stay at the kitchen sink but if I carry on that is what will happen.

Someone mentioned a bike I do have one I use that to get to the next village for the post office and a tiny shop.

Anyway it's sorted now. I just have to bite the bullet and pay UK prices:mad:. But thank you everyone.
Not sure how caravans got into the mix, but hey!
