Well it would save a tiny amount of fuel I guess, but you're right that is pretty extreme!

Nah, extreme would be turning the radio off..and throwing it out the window...there's another couple of kilograms saved :)

Fortunately Chris Moyles is no longer broadcasting so I'm now far less likely to do this than I used to be...

My husband is not weird, he is sick of me taking the !!!!!!. I don't NEED a car and that is his message.

You live in a small village with no buses. I would say you do NEED a car.

His message may be that you should stay in the kitchen

...unless you're doing 56mph behind a lorry (which are limited to 56mph)
Are you sure? Every one I've come across is doing 60MPH where the conditions allow.

Mmmm seems some miles will have to go and I will have to decide what journeys are really impotant.

The car is a Mondeo ST 2.2 deisel.
It's not just one trip otherwise yeah taking public transport would be the answer.
If i was to drive like an old person what milage would I get with this amout of money?

Why on Earth would you buy an ST if you can't even afford to fuel it?

If you're having to do 700 miles and you absolutely cannot find more than £50, I don't think driving (at least in that car) is for you. The ST TDCI can throw some scary bills with zero warning.

Trucks tend to do what my car speedo indicates is about 60 mph but which my satnav tells me is more like 56-57 mph, is this possibly where the confusion arrises?

Car speedos can't under-read, but can over-read up to 10%. Run of the mill cars tend to go as near to that limit as possible to both flatter their drivers and screw up accurate fuel consumption (using the odometer).
