kinski i remember i lined the bag for my sister it was a kit so everything was included - i cant remember now but think the lining was knitted.
i didnt line the green bag but i did sew some ribbon through the middle of the handles (they were knitted tubes as i thought they would be a bit too stretchy without)
think im going to line some of the ones im knitting at the moment but havnet decided how or what with yet.

looking forward to the soap pictures Flumina.

my sister commented earlier in the year she quite fancied having a go at candle making, and ever since family members have been given the most beautiful hand made candles as gifts from her they are gorgeous, i did burn the one i got for easter but the one i got for my birthday is just too beautiful, its a mug with a coffee coloured candle in with a white fluted tart set in the top around the wick, even now a month later i catch sight of it and think ive left a cofee to go cold it looks so real. mum got one in a vintage tea cup and saucer set.

I'd say go for it Flumina if your soaps look anything like my sisters candles friends and family will be delighted with your new hobby.

    Hi all,
I wasn't sure if making soap counts as crafts, but I'm hoping to get a batch made today. I'm using a slightly different oil this time. If it turns out ok I'll post some piccies tomorrow :)

I've always fancied having a go at making soap, so I'd love to see your photo's, Flumina!

I made soaps a couple of years ago for my daughters wedding ( did it to cut costs ), we bought the stuff for the soap from Hobby craft. We made small heart shaped soaps and used cheap silicone heart moulds that I bought from poundland to make them, we then wrapped them tightly in tin foil, everyone liked them and they were very surprised that they were home made, at least that's what they said to our faces :rotfl::rotfl:, I still have a couple here and they still have their colour ( green ) and they still smell of the apple fragrance we used.

I tend to stick to the same recipe for soap-making, but I've tried a different olive oil this time. Here are some of the ones I made yesterday:

(I will try and get a better picture of them, sorry, I'm still trying to work out how to use Flickr!)

They're not really a fancy soap, but once they've cured for a few weeks they make a lovely creamy moisturising soap, probably ideal for anyone with dry skin or who can't tolerate fragranced products. These ones should be ready about mid October.

These ones were made a few months ago, using coconut oil and pomace olive oil

Home-made soap still contains all its glycerin, unlike shop soaps, where they extract it and than sell it on separately, so the bars tend to be lovely and moisturising :)

  • Ohhh, Flumina, they're incredible! I like the flower soaps - they'd be brilliant as gifts and guest soaps, - but my favourite out of the two are the 'slab' or 'brick' shaped ones. I love the stamp impressed into the top of them letting people know that what they're buying is handmade, rather than mass made by machine.

I'm in awe of your cleverness.

Oh thankyou :) they're not that difficult to make, really. You just need to be careful when using lye. One of my relatives makes really fancy perfumed and coloured soaps, but I stick to my tried and trusted plain recipe. I think there are many different ways to make soap but I only know the cold-process method.

If you ever do make your own soap, I'm sure you'll never look back. I haven't bought soap from a shop for at least a couple of years now.

I'd love to make soaps too (I don't think there anything I wouldn't try!) but given that I bought a candle making kit last year and it remains unused I think I had better just sit back and admire this craft :o)
I've had such a busy fortnight with people being sick (myself included) I haven't had chance to any crafting for ages (about a week!!) so please keep sharing your makes to help me feel a little more involved xx
