I might be wrong as it's a long time since I read up on it and it wasn't an important detail to me as I didn't want either anyway but I *think* that if you have the injection they say they have to do immediate cord clamping/cutting.

Just wanted to add to this discussion as we covered it in an antenatal class this week. You can have the injection at any point, so if you choose to delay cord clamping and cutting for a few minutes later, or whenever it's stopped pulsating, you can still have the injection if you want it. The class leader also said you can choose to have a physiological third stage but then if it's taking a long time, not going well, or there's any risk to you, then you can opt to have the injection, even if it's been like half an hour.

I think I'd just take it in in a sterilised jam jar if they refused to give me one.

In theory, yes there's no reason not to. Depending on your receptive your surgeon is, there's also such a thing as a "natural" CS where they bring the baby out more gradually to try to replicate the natural birthing process more closely although I don't know enough about it to know what the risks/benefits are. (And obviously only an option for a planned CS.)

It's possible in theory, but not done routinely so it's something you'd have to discuss beforehand. They'll weigh up the benefits of delaying the cord clamping against any risks if resus is likely to be needed, etc. Apparently some doctors will ensure baby is lower than the placenta for 30 - 60 seconds before clamping so that gravity does its work in getting as much blood to baby as possible.

Thanks for clearing that up Poppy, I wonder if they'll cover it in my antenatal classes too? I'm a bit unsure about what the NCT ones will go into - I've participated in and helped out with a lot of our local NHS ones, but they're pretty basic tbh and I always wonder what else we should be covering.

Good news Jess, hope your experience is happy, healthy and problem free from now on :) Must have suprised your parents though!

BWP - I bet the info about traditional cord care was really interesting, I might have to go and have a nosey now :)

To anyone grossed out by lotus birthing - sorry! :rotfl: I find it an interesting idea, and I wouldn't judge anyone who made that decision for themself or their LO - but I just don't see the point and would be really concerned about the possibility of infection. We had a doula in work a while ago who'd done it and she made some interesting points, but not enough to convince me (or the midwives ;))
