But - I'm at a bit of a loss now as to how to do the name. I'm happy to design it, but without the normal guide of AIDA, I'm worried it will be untidy. Any good ideas on how I can mark up the fabric to get the letters on? And I'll do some in X stitch, so ideally I'd like to overlap a grid or something so I can be accurate and neat.

    Any advice? Thanks all!

Sounds like an ideal use for waste canvas - if you google it you'll see it's a sort of water soluble aida that you tack onto your fabric, stitch over then use water to soften the canvas and pull out the grinding threads one by one.

Oh great. I knew I wouldn't be the first person in the world with this problem!

Now that I'm looking at it though, I might instead do the name in Satin stitch, so I need it printed on the fabric. Can you buy something that could go through the printer and be transferred/ironed on - that would then come off with water?

Don't worry - google has sorted it for me! I should have done that to start... I've bought something called transfer-eze, so hopefully that works.

    Thanks all!
  • Hi, i've only just done my first cross stitch! Just a very small practice kit, but loved it, want to do this once i'm a bit better

    Hi ladies.

JCS. Nice SH square for Noah. To see the date makes you realise again just how young they were, poor babies.

Nmm. Nice BD update & nice birthday card, lovely.

Maisie. Lovely Winnie & Eeyore, really like it.

ems. Nice pic of your WIP. I look forward to seeing it progress as I'm intrigued by the 2 bulges/humps in the side of the piano :D

MrsMP. Garden bench is lovely all framed up.

BEG. Frnech hen made me :D

Mags. Nice MP wedding card, hope it's appreciated.

Time2deal. Welcome back. The quilt is super cute, it's adorable! Hope your transfer idea works and I look forward to seeing it finished.

Katie. Welcome! That's a cute design you plan to do, keep practicing and you will feel confident enough to do it in no time.

re buying fabric, I don't often buy fabric as I tend to do mostly kits so it's included but the last lot I bought came from both ebay and across town stitching. Across town can be found here http://www.across-town-stitching.talktalk.net/index.html
If I know the size I want I google and go with the best price.
If it's smaller pieces you want and you have a £land type shop keep your eyes open when in them. Ours have kits in them now and then and I buy them just for the fabric and threads but you do need to look at the fabric through the packet if you can as quality can be a bit hit and miss sometimes but on the whole, for £1, they are nice little stash builders.

  • Mags_cat - love the MP card. I've also got that book but I am NOT starting anything new until 12 Days is finished (well cross stitching not the making up of it.) I am sure the bride and groom will love the card btw.

time2deal - welcome back to the Cafe :hello:. Good luck with the lettering on the quilt. Look forward to seeing your next update.

katielouisej - welcome to the Cafe :hello:. Good luck with your next project. Don't forget to post a pic to let us see how you are getting on with it (we're a nosey bunch here :D).

World of Cross Stitching has landed on my doormat this morning. Promised myself I am not opening it until I have done some chores and then that can be my reward (hope this issue is worth it).

    Have a good weekend everyone.

Helloooo I am back from Norfolk! Got back late last night and we are off to France first thing tomorrow, so frantic washing going on here.

I am meant to be packing  but DH has popped out for a haircut, so I wanted to upload a couple of pics of two projects I managed to complete last week:

    DSC05076.jpg
Free kit with a magazine I had to buy as car tyre was being fixed....

    DSC05078.jpg
and I even managed to do beads :j

Won't be taking any stitching with me next week as apparently it's anti-social (we are holidaying with 11 other family members) so don't expect any updates from me! I will look forward to all your news when I return.

    A bientot!
