kidcat my basic flapjack recipe is in 'old money': melt four ounces of butter in a pan with two and a half tablespoons of golden syrup and one ounce of sugar. Stir in eight ounces of oats and mix really well. Press into a well greased tin (I line mine with baking paper instead) and bake at gas 3 or 160 c for about 20 minutes until golden and firm.

For the muesli bars I melt 140g light brown sugar, 3 tablespoons of golden syrup (or runny honey, or a mix of the two) and 140g butter. Must be butter to get the bars to set. When melted add to the dry mix which is 250g oats, 85g raisins or sultanas, 85g chopped nuts (use other seeds or fruit if nuts are a problem), 50g mixed seeds, 50g chopped apricots and 25g dried cranberries. Mix well, press into tin and bake at gas 3 or 160C for about 35 minutes. Leave to cool completely before cutting (if you can resist it). You can chop and change the dried fruit and nuts depending what you need to use up as long as you end up with roughly the same quantity. I sometimes add the zest of a lemon if I have one to hand, cuts through the sweetness. I've also had good results reducing the sugar, still turns out fine if you want a healthier option.

We are just back from doctors and the good news is ds9 scarlet fever has cleared but he has now developed pneumonia so new anti biotic and another week of battle to get him to take them. Means he won't be at school for first few days next week either. Doctor said dd7 had a cough that didn't sound good either and I should take her back Friday if it's still there. Oh the joy of parenthood. :)

Gosh Kidcat, that sounds a bit scary. May all be well.
Wellington has cream fur and brown legs? I think I know the breed he is.
My brother has two of those.
He was meant to have one but when they went to pick Harvey up his sister Bella would have been distraught without him, so she came as well.
Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.

Goodness me kidcat, make sure you take care of yourself as well as your young ones, sounds like you are having a tough time.

mar looks like the lady curlers didn't so so well:( better luck to the chaps later.

Muesli bars in oven, smelling good even through my blocked nose. Dd has texted to request a jam sponge so will see what I can do to oblige as she's working long days on her placement at the hospital and there have been a couple of deaths on her ward (geriatric, if we are allowed to use that word now) which have upset her.
  • Overheard on the bus this morning 'Granny, when are we going to get the oranges for Grandads phone?' poor Granny tried explaining to the little lad that it wasn't oranges that they were going to buy but going to the Orange phone shop. Small child pondered for a moment and said 'Granny, but Grandads phone is black, it isn't orange', granny tried explaining about the mobile phone network being called Orange and small child said'Granny I like oranges, praps we could buy some anyway and then if Grandad needs one for his phone we'll have one won't we?', Granny very sensibly said 'OK, we'll get some oranges!!!' cute eh?
