I must admit the cost of the insurance is rather "ouchy" (£1300!!!!) she will be going to Uni later this year but works part time so can afford to run the car, she will be living at home still and going to the local(ish) Uni. A yearly bus pass is £1100 and will involve a 2 hour commute each day so a car makes much more sense.
She's so excited and already told DD2 how much she'll charge her per mile if she wants lifts
When I was learning to drive, my test date was dictated by my dad, who told me 'taxi service stops at the beginning of the summer holidays'. WHich I didn't much care about. Until he said 'for both of you'. At which point my brother made VERY clear I had to pass my test.
Part of the deal with my parents letting me use their car and paying for petrol over the summer was that I did ALL the chauffeuring of my brother. And then I had to do his school run (we were both at different boarding schools due to where we lived). i now realise that all this was actually for my own benefit to make sure I did LOTS of driving after passing my test. After all, it wasn't wildly convenient for my parents living in the middle of nowhere to have us commandeering one of their two cars as much as we did! But it gave me, and then my brother, a chance to get experience of driving before we had to take on the costs ourselves. But insurance for new drivers wasn't quite as expensive then. Particularly the first year, when my dad pointed out that his car was insured for ANY driver, and it didn't specify they had to have a full licence
I think if we'd been a school locally my mother might have put her foot down about being carless quite so much of the time!0 -
Hi everyone ,have been reading along ,have not had much time to post lately, sure one day I will meet myself coming back into my house, its nonstop at the moment..
Seems a lot of people are finding going tough at present, lots of hard decesions, can only say kidcat ,find out as much as you can about the opp, when it involves your children everything seems horrid,if the long term benefits out way the opp and the pain , and you have a good consultant that you are happy with, sure you will make the right decision .,horrid choice .

Morning all
Sky is ominously strange, a sort of steel grey mixed with peachy highlights....blummin' windy though.
I'm getting increasingly angry with all the social media witch hunting that's going on over the flooding, this is an extreme, freaky weather event, this little island can't be prepared for everything. There were people on the news last big moaning that they've been told nothing and had to fill their own sandbags.....really? Are we really so namby pamby as a country now that protecting our own property is too much like hard work? There was one group who had ordered their sand and just got on with it - good for them, why should anyone else help you if you're not prepared to help yourself?
And breathe.....
Oven cleaning, floor scrubbing, fire cleaning, log stacking and dinner cooking on the cards today.
Jem - how are you feeling now?
Shegar - how's life with you? Any news from SS?

Morning all, just back from taking mum to aldi. Had to go a day early as im working tomorrow morning then taking mum for her scan. All go here again. Mum was sorting out paper work and has discovered she has an investment due out soon, so have that to investigate. DD has decided to look at buying a house. Rentals here are around the £550 to £600 for a 2 bed house here. But they often only allow 6 months tenancy and then you renew, with more costs attached. There is a local builder doing a mini road contains 12 houses. 2 are on offer for 50% buying and 50% rental, so well within their budget. They need a small deposit, I say small £3k. Well mum has agreed to give them it to help them. It means they can have a home to call their own and a forever home.
Kidcat, this may not be the same but my eldest DD had one of her ribs removed and then they attached titanium rods to her spine. Was a very major operation and I can vouch that you will do anything to help ease their pain. She had to spend 5 days in high dependency unit afterwards. Roll on 5 years and it has changed her life. Her astamah has nearly gone and she can walk normally. She works for 30hrs a week too, so life is normal. If you want any info please pm me. I am sure DD will help too if that's any good for you.
Going to take mum out for lunch today, just a pub snack but it gets her out the house for an hour or two. Its hard as she cant go far on her own, but if I can help I do.
Take care everyone xBSC member 137

I spout off about folk taking responsibility for their own protection too Pooky. Seems we're now a nation of expecting everything to be secured/arranged/changed/protected/solved/paid for... it makes for 'news' that just gets my goat!
I could go on and on but I won't as already moaned about it on preppers. Anyway I have news!
Next week we're getting a brand new heating system installed!it's been a struggle but the end is near. I'm so relieved. The mess and destruction will be awful but so very worth it.
Monnagran are companies faffing about because they have to get things across the water?
Left over braised beef went in sarnies today so my lunch is ready and waiting.
I have to work another weekend this weekend. I've told them I will do it for them this first time but no more. I need my family time. I'm also going to arrange an evening off when my NVQ starts as I just don't have much time lately and don't know how I will fit it in.
My crochet blanket is coming along slowly... very slowly!
I hope everyone will be ok in the coming hours. Nasty, nasty day ahead of us. The shed has all but lost its roofing felt and the sides are bevelling. I hope it lasts this winter but all too aware that a shed to worry about is nothing to worry about at all... compared to some0 -
Nutty thank you.
I do see what the benefits would be and he does really want it - however he is closed down today with the stress and has retreated to his room. Its all a worry.
We had a very light sprinkling of snow last night which got us all excited, forecast said more overnight but we woke to yucky rain and yet more winds - am soooooo fed up of wind and rain. And yes I know we havent had it as bad as so many others, but I would like a good snow/frost and some bright days just as a pick me up.
DS9 is off school as well today, his throat is still sore and today we have a bright red rash on shoulders and neck, having received email from DD7 school yesterday warning scarlet fever is in the area and highly contagious we are now waiting to visit the doctor, oh joy!!
Feeling really low and still exhausted today, really looking forward to Friday when kids break up and we get a week off.
Pooky - I agree that everyone should be taking part in protecting their community and working together, one of the stories I saw of neighbours working together struck me as lovely that people who had never met were working together and becoming a community again. It may not be much but its a small blessing in such devastation. I have to say I am fed up of hearing politicians spouting that insurance companies must pay up quicker etc - as I said to OH last night, half of them will be affected too, add in staff who are affected and areas still unreachable, and you have an impossible situation for everyone.0 -
Hello all.
still here, still muddling through.
SQ, thank you for worrying about me, it means a lot when you guys think of me and pms from you make me smile.
I try to read along, but by the time i have caught up there is no time to post.. lol.
Hubby still going, he will reach his year milestone on the 21st, of Feb, and will send an email to his consultant saying... "still here"
Although his health is going down hill in slow motion.
Anyway need to search why half my electric isn't working... Some sockets work. Some ceiling light work but dull... All trip switches on...
any Thoughts?today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.
