Me too Molly, thought it was long gone.
  • Morning all,

Afraid today is a work from bed day for me. OH's school has had some damage in the storm and so it has been closed for the day. They let us know last night so have had a bit of a lie in, so hopefully with a bit more rest today I'll see this cold out. I'm thinking of getting a bell so he can fetch for me, can't have him lying about wasting his day off:rotfl:

Grandma, thanks for posting the link, I had a read this morning, and felt very nostalgic, it is such a lovely story! I must have been very impressionable as a child as the thing I remembered most was the doctor ordering all of the toys to be burnt. I was horrified!

Kidcat, I hope the little ones are feeling better, would an oatmeal bath help with the itching?

Because Scarlet fever is bacterial antibiotics should see it off without long term damage being done. When my kids were small we were told it had been downgraded to Scarlatina because the bug was not as strong as in the past but if a child has other problems I would be extra careful just to be sure.

I have an elderly friend who had to leave her newborn baby and go into an isolation hospital because her other daughter had Scarlet fever and they suspected she had it too. She was gone weeks and her poor hubby was left to cope with baby and the other children.
  • Sorry so many of you are facing difficulties just now.

Can any of you sewing experts help me. I can just about sew a button on, but OH bought super bargain trousers too long. After learning to have them shortened is £10, I am going to have a go!. I have cut them and pressed a hem the correct size. The edges are fraying. They are super fine wool. Shall I turn over a tiny hem? It might look too bulky.
  • Juliettet, if you're worried about bulk you can use hem tape, should be able to get it in most places that sell haberdashery. It basically helps to prevent fraying without turning the fabric under.
  • here are some pictures, I just wanted to clarify that I didn't mean the iron-on stuff. I've never used it but I'm not sure I would. http://www.afashionablestitch.com/2012/shop_talk/for-the-love-of-seam-binding/

Morning toughies, scarlet fever had by all accounts been eradicated, however in recent years it has made a come back.
Have resorted to piriton to help the itching and will be doing the bicarb in the bath bit later to, havent heard of oatmeal bath though?

DD7 is full of cold this morning and her throat seems to relate to that so have allowed her in but said no swimming. Teacher will call if she feels unwell.

DS15 has gone back to bed with stomach ache so I am house bound today, should hopefully mean I get some paper work sorted and organised a little assuming I can persuade the new printer it wants to be friends with our computer etc.

Mrs Vp- sounds an absolute nightmare journey

Hope everyone is all safe this morning, its a bright day here but very cold which is fine. OH is bringing sand bags home today as water level in back garden got a little higher than I am comfortable with last night.

Monna - love the funeral ideas, the price of funerals has risen to an incredible level, and some local churches are advocating a slightly more DIY route to keep costs down, coffins can be purchased online and hundreds saved, add in not paying funeral directors for organising notices in the paper, simple flowers and online printing services for service cards and the price comes down dramatically. Unfortunately families are usually so upset they simply cannot bring themselves to "penny pinch" as one family told me a few weeks ago.
  • Kidcat, oatmeal will work much like bicarb, although it tends to leave a protective layer on the skin. Just put the cheapest porridge oats in an old pair of tights, tie off and run a bath over them. The water will look milk and feel sort of silky, or perhaps a bit slimy. You can use both bicarb and oats at the same time if you want. If your children have sensory difficulties they may find one texture preferable to the other! HTH.

Just to but in...my middle.child is 3 and has had scarlet fever twice, one at 18 months and again at two and a half. You have my sympathies kidcat, it was ok for me because ds was young enough o take his medicine with minimum fuss. Hopefully your son will come around to the idea if he's really uncomfortable. It made ds miserable while the antibiotics kicked in but he perked up pretty quick.

don't forget to take 5 minutes for a cuppa for yourself, looking after poorly kids is draining.
