so many lovely people with more pressing problems than mine, but I am trying to make a quick hummus with a can of chick peas, a blob of peanut butter (seen to recall reading Jack Monroe saying tahini isn't necessary) some jarred garlic cloves and olive oil...... I'm struggling to get it all together with just my little mouli, and I am wondering if I should have cooked the chick peas until softer first.....
been away for a while and will get caught up eventually, but it feels good to be 'home' on the OS board again xThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Hi - you should not need to cook them further, unless they are really really hard (I get the odd tin like that). If it's too stiff a mix, add a bit of lemon juice, and a bit more oil if you can take it. Actually can be left a bit crunchy, we like it like that. When you say mouli, do you mean one with a handle you turn? Never tried making hummous lin mine, but if it's not happening, have you got a stick blender?
You only get the smilies if you 'post reply' on the bottom left of the last post, they are available in the reply box on the right hand side :hello:Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
thank you !! :hello:
yes, I do mean a good old crank the handle mouli, as I don't have any other kitchen equipment at the moment that might help other than a fork and a potato masher !!
better add a bit more elbow grease methinks :rotfl:This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I find there is a knack for stuff that 'won't go' through the mouli, I poke the food into the 'mouth' of the blade then turn again. Takes a bit of time but sometimes the food just seems to ride over the top all the time. Having said that, I love my mouli!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

lemon juice - the missing miracle ingredient !! thank you so much !!
didn't have any juice to hand, but remembered some frozen slices bagged up in the freezer.... a quick zap in the microwave, a shake of garlic powder and some black pepper and hey presto - a roughly textured (more power to the back of a fork) chick pea spread that bears a passing resemblance to a shop bought version....
AND the added bonus of the microwave having a bit of a spritz with some hot lemon too !!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Hello everyone,
been reading along but either too busy with all sorts of tasks or my head has been too fuzzy to reply sorry. Seem to have been alternating with days getting stuff done and days when I feel exhausted - maybe there is a connection!
Good stuff: started my mood and stress management course today - there was a huge group of people there, apparently they invite about 80 at a time and typically 20-30 turn up - today there seemed about 50! It was a lecture style with questions thrown out to participants and opportunities to ask brief questions. I answered 2 QS, I would say only about 15% of people spoke at all and as public speaking is a big deal for me I am very pleased with myself. Had a headache the rest of the day though and couldn't concentrate on much else after. Came home to calm down rather than go shopping.
Also have my 1st counselling session on Friday. Meant to be a phone assessment but I asked for face to face as I struggle with the phone especially with something so emotional and lengthy. I am getting more assertive, asking for what I need these days.
Last bit of good news, DH passed his 1st exam of this year's course.
Then the not so good...
Upsetting stuff with both sides of family (hey what's new?) I have tried to convey an issue sensitively with my side by email and as usual I am met with total silence.
DH is upset on my behalf that 3 out of 4 of his family groupings "forgot" my birthday and the 4th was late. It is his birthday coming up soon and he wants to tell them not to bother sending him anything if they have left me out.
I don't know why we are the designated scapegoats but we are. I feel like we are having a mass family "divorce", we are getting closer and closer to breaking all contact entirely. It will be hard to live with but do-able as DH and I will eventually come to terms with it but what will we tell our children who have already built up relationships with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins? Without them the kids have us two and a couple of close family friends (who have big wider families of their own) We still haven't made a will as we have no-one we can ask to be the childrens' guardians, how awful is that?
