Fuddle, almost all of our butter is frozen. A couple of years ago it just kept going up and up in price so now whenever I see 500g for under a pound a get ahead. Its been 95ishp/500g at Aldi for awhile now.
To make butter from cream you need to whip it past the whipped cream stage and keep going. Then you need to push the excess water out. It keeps longer if you are careful to get all water out and salt it. Alternatively, you can put it in a sealed jar and shake the daylights out of it. Great task for young ones!0 -
Thanks for the feedback. I remember I did a little experiment a good few years back and was shocked at how little butter it made. I have no intention of making it this way at all, I just was trying to get a recap. Knowledge is power and you never know I might be in a situation where I might need that
I find butter very expensive. I am paying £2.10 today for 500g block. I must get to Aldi! Still, standard price of 250g is about £1 here so not too far off.
When I count how many grocery items I am getting for my money these days I am quite cross. I work an hour to buy my butter, bread, cheese and milk. Factor in everything else needed to keep a roof over our head and I think that is just scandalous.
Still, If my working class ancestors worked an hour and were able to walk away with an armful of basics like that I think they would be very chuffed indeed. Count my blessings huh?
Hang in there possession. I know it's easier to cope with situations when you're busy and organising. It must be soul destroying when things are stagnant. Look after yourself and your family P, things come up out of the blue.0 -
Ooh, I've just mis-typed fuddle, it is 95p for 250g at Ald!--not quite as impressive!
Possession, do hang in there. My thoughts are with you and I do hope the house sells quickly. You'll have to remember your skills for the new house and use them to make your new home as lovely as can be.x0 -
Aah never mind fpk. It's still cheaper
I've been sorting out my kitchen cupboards. Surprisingly, with a little rearranging and now half my kit is hung on the wall, I can get more stocks in there
I am wondering though, where could I get a 3 tier plate rack from. That would give me more room.0 -
If youv got an Iceland near you, butter there is 89p for 250g,I get it for OH.hth£71.93/ £180.000

Sheila try not to dwell on the MRI it may not be as bad as you think. I know right now you think I am getting so many things it is one of those things that happens when you have been a full time carer. Everything will be sorted out. When you really need it the NHS is very good. I don't think I would have liked to be a private patient when I passed out at the top of the stairs I would have probably died waiting for a transfer to a private hospital. Private hospitals do not have Intensive Care.
Oh possession I do hope you either get a new job or the hose sells soon.
Iceland's milk has also gone down to 89p today.
Hugs to all the sick ones but don't give me your germs I don't want to set off what happened last year.
Someone bought DS two Euro Lottery tickets today as a thank you for giving him cigarettes last week. He is off planing what to do with the money. He has never had a lottery ticket before.
Thank goodness not heating on last night or today I may save a little towards what it has cost me for him to go on that course.
Fuddle I look at my kitchen and wonder how you manage to put things on the walls? The only wall space in mine is above the back door and the kitchen is too narrow to get a step ladder in for me to get up there. My step stool to get into the cupboards is not tall enough.0 -

That's a good price boult thanks. I have access to an Iceylaand but I rarely venture in as never seem to see anything better or cheaper than my other supermarkets. Will have to check it out again.
We used to have a sunflower spread then changed to butter than back to spreads and now we buy both. The kids don't really like butter, DH loves it but only has it at the weekend and I use butter but spread it thinly and other times nothing at all. I use a cheapy marg for baking. I still can't decide whether its better to use butter as spreads are not natural products or spreads as they are lower in fat (and cheaper.) Even the experts seem divided in opinion!
School had a lovely Harvest Festival today. They themed it on WW1 and baked some bread and other things with WW1 recipes and compared them to modern recipes. Unfortunately only the front row got to taste them. I thought of you all as I sat there.
I am so glad it's Friday, no rushing about first thing in the morning. I am implementing the family chores session this weekend and we are also going to a little theme park, fairly local to us using up the last of the reward vouchers that didn't get used as planned over the summer. It is a specific reward for all DS10's effort with the secondary school tests though DS7 also gets to join in.0 -

I only have one wall cupboard in this house. There's a pantry but that houses recycling and wellies until we fathom how to kit it out for a pantry without damaging it as it's a good 30 year old. We have an ikea shelf above the cooker where we have the pans and cook books. This is where my notice board used to be, that is now behind my little fridge freezer to make room for the shelves below.0 -
Fuddle - your shelves look great - so neat & tidy too! If its any help Morrisons have 2 x 500gms of Anchor Spreadable for £4.00 & Aldi's is 95p for 250gm HTHSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

On a couple of occasions I bought some spreadable butter, because it seemed more natural than margarine. Cursing at the price of it, I looked at the ingredients list - some of these spreadable butters are only 60-70% butter, the rest being oil and water!
Then someone on this thread (I forget who) stated a case of the bleeding obvious - why pay two or three quid a tub for this stuff when you can get an ordinary block of butter for just under a quid and keep it in a butter dish on your worktop?????
And that is what I now do - real spreadable butter at a more realistic price. One life - your life - live it!0
