Oh SQ rant away - hopefully it will make you feel a little calmer to writie it down! Doesnt sort the issue though - I guess the 'mars and venus' analogy is probably apt here! I think men have a very different view of entitlement to relaxation! I am single but I know from past relationships and from listening to friends' tales of woe that this is a constant area of friction - no words of advice though (i'm single remember so obviously not qualified to advise!)

Pooky - fantastic achievemnets - must of been a very proud moment.

Possession - I love books too and after reading your posts think I should try to get rid of some of mine - they are literally everywhere - I have shelves in the conservatory, study, kids rooms, upstairs landing and piles on my bedroom too! need to take a leaf out of your book!

Managed to get my DS to school on time for his trip after a false start - forgot his inhaler! Then went off into town to the market with DD3 to see if her tablet is worth repairing - it has a broken screen. The chap in the shop said he would ring on Monday to tell me price of screen - might not be viable as it was only a cheap tablet. Then went to the cake supplies shop to get a sugar thermometer - I wanted to try making cinder toffee to see if it would be good for christmas presents and school fayre - then bumped into a friend I havent seen for months and ended up going back to hers for coffee - nice catch up - but never got round to the cinder toffee! I did manage to be very MSE with dinner when I managed to make 4 chicken wings stretch to feed the 3 of us (low fat fake KFC) plus made a pan of chicken and sweetcorn chowder from the stock! My freezer is now full of soup but its a bit of a russian roulette as I managed to burn a pan of soup on friday (left it to cook while I did an online tutorial) but I couldn't bear to bin it so ate some and froze some - but it tastes slightly burnt - so you might get nice creamy chicken or slightly dodgy bottom of fridge veggy! (note to self - lable freezer foods!!!)
Tomorrow will be more productive - garden is not going to put itself to bed for winter!

Well it would be worth a try, but I suspect she would get confused which buttons to press and am not sure she would be able to push the buttons. Pretty sure she couldn't push the button at the bottom which turns it on for example. I'll ask my mum if they've tried that.
Judi it has actually felt very cathartic to lose the books. DH hasn't mentioned regretting it. (Though I have been too cowardly to ask!)
Next step is the garage so the empty bookcases can be moved into it. Then I shall need to look up some magic techniques for fixing the carpet when it's had heavy weights on it for years.
  • POSSESSION I have read if you leave an ice cube on the indentation overnight it should lift the fibres.

If it is over a large area you could use a steam iron, but don't put the iron on the carpet for fear of it melting.

Good luck with your eventual move, I think it could be an exciting chapter in your lives,

Candlelight I have a steam mop, I wonder if that would work at all.
Of course, I also need to disguise the fact that the carpet underneath will be considerably cleaner than the rest of the carpet!
  • I am not sure Possession, worth a try. Perhaps somewhere in a corner just in case.

Do you think it might be worth your while hiring a carpet cleaning machine, but unless it is extremely dirty I would leave it, perhaps just spot clean. I think most people would probably budget for new carpet when buying a new house.

I already shelled out for professional cleaning (it wasn't much more than the hire and the cleaning fluid) but I can't say it made much difference. The carpet upstairs predates us moving here (so over 12 years) and I think it's just too far gone. There are no big jobs to be done but anyone buying this will need to recarpet and redecorate if they want a pristine house.
  • Possession, I wouldn't worry about it then, I know you have been de-cluttering and that will make the whole house look better.

    Good luck

Possession - you can buy magnifiers for reading and borrow books in large print from libraries (not sure if all libraries.) RNIB has a list of several places you can buy very large print books from and think they may have some sort of borrowing service. SENSE (deafblindness charity) has some excellent advice on living with dual sensory impairment and well worth a look if you haven't done so already. You will find them very helpful if you have any Qs. Apologies if you already have this info.

We also have books in every room in the house other than the hall and the downstairs loo which is tiny though technically I could put up a thin high shelf. Every room in the house sounds a lot, just bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bathroom!

Laundry pile has been breeding again and we have lovely sunshine so that's one priority task. Having a quiet day pottering about with chores, list making, helping with homework and similar. Plenty of tea breaks though - it is Sunday after all.

Good morning everyone, hope you all have a good day.

Squiggly How lovely to "see" you! I remember you from the Daily threads ages ago. While we were in your lovely town we came across "The Scribe" in Cornfield Terrace, and I splashed out on some beautiful Advent calendars which the owner had just brought back from Stuttgart. I only stayed in the ground floor part, where their cards were - didn't dare go downstairs to look at the writing stuff etc, or goodness knows how much I would have spent, not at all OS or MSE :o

SQ Glad all well so far on the 11+ front. (((HUGS))) re annoying OH.

judi24 good luck re DD's tablet repair. Perhaps the cinder toffee will happen this week instead :)

Nice to know we're not the only household with oceans of books! A lot of mine are ones I bought years ago but have held on to them because every time I go back to them after a gap of several years I find something new.

possession How very sad that your Grandma can't enjoy her books any more :o And of course if she did let them go it would only emphasize the fact that she can't read them IYSWIM.
  • Well my parents managed to whittle down Grandma's books considerably when she moved but there is still a library full. She has a magnifying glass but she also has very bad osteoperosis and arthritis, and a shaking condition, so she can't hold it. My mum managed to find one book at the library she wanted which was in larger print, but in general the books available in large print are NOT books she would ever consider reading. She isn't a normal Grandma, LOL! Think socialist, sandal-wearing, garlic pearl-eating wholefood veggie Guardian-reading ex-teacher. It's a real shame, she used to be so active. The perils of growing old.
