Sheila if you like your sauces a bit creamier I like to add a *cough* dessert spoon of low fat cream cheese to my warm pasta which melts nicely. This works even if you have used a tomato based sauce. It tastes good cold as well as I often took this to work for nightshift xx0

Morning everyone
Another one who needs to loose 2 stone - and there would still be some spare fat in case I need some for survival purposes, who knows when I might be in a plane crash and end up in the mountains with only my body fat to keep me going?I'm sure the SHTF folk would agree.
Good luck with your op Sheila. Lovely to hear how happy DH is in his 2nd home. You will be able to relax more once all your medical appointments/op are out of the way. Great you are looking after yourself at long last.
Hope you feel a bit better (or a lot better!) today FairyP. How are you PIC?
Good you have your appointments fuddle.
I used to keep a jar of pasta sauce in case an easy and quick meal was needed but now boys dislike it (so used to home made now) and the jar we have has sat in the cupboard for months. Might drop it into the food bank trolley. You might like it though Sheila and good to have some easy food if you are too poorly to cook from scratch. Better than a takeaway or being hungry!
Got kids into school by skin of our teeth today. DH was running late (again - he is currently like a third child!) so tried to orchestrate dropping him at the station en route to dropping off DS10 at his friends (walking to school without me practise) and then finally take DS7 to school. Got stuck in a rare traffic jam. Yesterday we did the same thing, no jam but DS10 trod in animal poo of some kind and whilst helping him change his shoes I inadvertently stepped in more and trod it all over the hall, loo and kitchen. Had to come home before doing anything else to sort it all out. Euuuugh! Wonder what tomorrow's school run will bring?
Still eating down the freezer which is helpful as finances are tight this month and trying to buy as little food as possible til pay day/voucher day next week. Yesterday slung in several wrinkly chopped red apples, yellow and red peppers, lots of sage into slow cooker with pork and kids had it with rice. They loved it. Meant to add in mushrooms and other veg later in the cooking process but forgot.
Not sure what to concoct tonight. Have no fresh veg but couple bags of stir fry veg and some frozen cooked chicken so could do an easy stir fry with noodles.
Banana using up Q please
Yet again have very ripe bananas left. Fed up with banana bread, muffins and pancakes. If I mash them up and freeze them for banana ice cream - will I need to add anything else?0 -
SQ just freeze the bananas whole and mash them when you take them out of the freezer. Or eat them whole, frozen, it's my son's favourite.0

Morning all
savingqueen you can blitz frozen bananas to make instant ice cream http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-creamy-ice-cream-with-just-one-ingredient-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-93414
Further down the page are extra recipes for other flavours.
fuddle There is nothing wrong with buying things to make your life easier, including white sauce. I use St Delia's all in one method to make it and it always works. Just put all the cold ingredients in a saucepan and heat, whisking all the time, until it comes to the boil and thickens. Then simmer for a bit to finish cooking out the flour.
VJsmum I hope that the trip to I*ea went well. Unfortunately DS2 is moving from the box room into DS1's bigger room, so I don't even have more space to look forward to. DH has put a stop to my plans to turn the small room into a library as apparently DS1 will need a bed to come back to. He is such a spoilsport.
An old school friend of DH's is coming to visit today, so I'm trying and failing to bring some order to the chaos. DS1 deciding to sort out his room last night hasn't helped as I now have a pile of stuff for the charity shop adding to the mess in the living room. It is one of those days when everything seems like a huge effort. I still need to scrub the kitchen at least.
Oh well, it will be lovely to see her and it's a good excuse to go out to dinner.
Much love and hugs to everyone xxx0 -

Thanks for this! I didn't know you could do ice-cream, there are frozen ,whole bananas in the freezer so I'll slightly thaw them enough to slice and blitz. Icecream for breakfast, nom, nom!

Banana and date flapjacks
Ingredients
1 tsp vanilla essence
80ml vegetable oil
180g oats
175g dates, chopped
2 bananas, sliced
Method
Mash the bananas in a large bowl.
Add the dates and oil to the bananas and mix together.
Stir in the oats and the vanilla essence and
leave for 5 mins, so the oats absorb the oil.
Spoon the mixture into a well greased baking tray and bake at 175C/Gas Mark 5 for about 25 minutes.
Serve.

I make double the quantity, which just fits a swiss roll tin.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

It's such a pity I hate bananas0 -
Thanks for both the icecream and flapjack recipes. My food processer packed up a while ago and waiting til we can afford another. I do have a (relatively unused) smoothie maker so that might do the trick. All the icecream flavours sound good to me!
No dates but various other dried fruit which need using up so will improvise. Will try and make both tonight as have several nanasI did a little shop for some fresh bits today, really trying to spend as least as possible on food until payday.
I make my white sauce in stages - butter and flour first then gradually add in milk. My friend does it your way SDG - time I gave it a go next time I make some.
This forum is great for inspiring me to try new things, might only be little things for me as a simple cook and baker but pre-children I would never have though I would do things like bake my own bread by hand. Who knows what you can do until you try eh?
I have spent a good chunk of the day shopping for essentials - my poor feet are sore with walking to so many different shops to get the best prices. I need to start up my notebook again jotting down where is cheapest otherwise I will forget. I was crafty with the car parking - one place is cheaper for short term so I parked and returned to the car before the cheap rate run out, drove out and back in collecting a new ticket to repeat. Saved me £1.50. Some car parks don't allow it but nothing on signs you couldn't so I tried it and it was fine.0
