Most clothing, even undies, will only take a 40 degree wash, according to the label. The only undergarments I've seen that can be thrown in on a 60 degree wash or higher are Sloggis.

Yes, all my clothes say 40 degrees but I still wash them at 60 and have never had any problems. I would prefer to wash the outer clothes at 50 but my new machine doesn't have that option.

I foudn that figuring out how the washing machine works and knowing more than my house mate realy helped. I know how to operate the timer program so that my clothes have finished their wash in time for me getting up in the morning!

We don't have a tumble drier, so also have to compete for drying space. My latest gripe though is that, no matter how many times I tell him, my house mate just dosn't understand that I don't like other people touching my laundrey, and also don't like touching theirs (yes, I know it's clean.... but it's just... odd). He dosn't seem to think it's an issue leaving his pants drying all around the house when he goes off for the weekend... eww.

Bugs are everywhere, you can't let them rule your life.

I wash my uniforms at 60 because of what I do, but everything else is 40 or below if its not completely filthy. I've only ever had one UTI and it wasn't caused by my washing machine, :o

You shouldn't really run the washing machine when you are asleep because of the risk of it catching fire or flooding. I used to run it overnight until I read about how common washing machine fires are.

No, but you can minimize the risk of them causing problems. If, as the scientist says, faecal bugs aren't completely destroyed below 60 degrees (although I suppose he might be being sponsored by an electricity company) then it makes sense to wash underwear at that temperature.
  • Haha I had an ex housemate that went crackers when I regularly popped all his dry laundry on his bed because he didn't like me touching it...not my problem when there's 5 of us in the house that need that space and you can't be bothered to move it! He used to come downstairs in the morning, pick up a pair of pants and socks, then go back up and get dressed!

When I was house sharing, I woke up in the middle of the night to a burning smell. It was the tumble dryer that my housemate had put on just before he went to bed. I managed to turn it off just before it caught light!! He was most confused to wake up in the morning and find his clothes strewn about the house drying!

The tumble dryer was very old and a bit poorly, which is why it went a bit wrong. We got a smoke alarm fitted soon afterwards!

    Hehe.

I had a housemate who, in the two weeks leading up to her moving out, had my washing machine and dryer going 24/7. The weather was amazing so absolutely no need to use the dryer.

She then tried to do a runner (silly girl had her new address plastered all over facebook :D) without paying the last month's electricity bill of £169!!!!!

That was the total amount we paid for 4 months in winter and she'd racked it up in a month

In the end I removed the fuse so she couldn't use it anymore.

Re the repeated comments about the hippy's rags, they are at least clean!

I'm one of the scruffiest people I know but my clothes are always clean. Two of the smelliest people I've ever come across were both very fashionable women who would wear and wear again (and again) because their clothes needed dry cleaning

It depends what temperature you wash the clothes at. I wash everything at 60 degrees (except woollens which I wash separately at 40 degrees) as otherwise it can cause urinary infections especially in women:

That seems like overkill and a waste of energy to me.

Why not just wash underwear and bedding at 60 and wash your clothes at 30c? There is no need to wash something like a t-shirt at 60c.

In American they normally wash their clothes in cold water and I've washed many things in cold water before over there and my clothes still come out clean.

You don't need to paranoid about bugs unless someone in your house has a low immune system or something.

OP - glad you got your revenge.
