As I said on the "Police 'misconduct' and Rug Doctor" thread, if ever the Earth is threatened and they need to find the very best examples of humanity to send off in a rocket, people who always read all the terms and conditions, never forget to make a payment, never make a mistake about a date and never, ever, use a word like 'scam' of 'swindle' without checking to ensure they are using the very strictest dictionary definition - and of course always check sell-by dates before purchasing - they can come and knock on my door. ;)

    .

If you choose not to undertake the basic checks when buying things, there's only one party at fault and it isn't the store. To then expect compensation from a store is taking the proverbial.

Yes, I've made these mistakes in the past, but had the common-sense to learn not to repeat my error rather than cast blame everywhere else.

I'm a bit confused why you quoted my post.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me or not.

The part of my post you quoted was based on another thread where Azari was 'having a go' at posters he deemed were too perfect to make a mistake.

As I said (in the bit you didn't quote), I don't expect other people to make sure I don't buy something that is still on sale on the sell-by date.

No probs :), it was on another thread and I didn't actually quote the full post by Azari in my earlier post, just copied most of it. ;)

The earlier post didn't really relate to this thread. In that I was bemoaning people who seem to expect everyone to always check every little thing, ignoring the fact that in the real world people do take shortcuts with people and companies that they believe they can trust.

In this thread I was simply agreeing with ThumbRemote about the rather unpleasant effect whereby, when someone makes a post with which there is general disagreement, an unnecessarily large number of people pile in, all pointlessly saying the same thing.

Fair enough, the first few people say what needs to be said but when two days later your are still getting posts poking fun at the OP you have to wonder what is lacking in people's lives that they feel the need to do that.

In this thread you were also bemoaning people who post a lot on this board who were 'perfect' (your post #22) - pretty much the same as your comments about 'perfect posters' on the 'rug doctor' thread.

And in my real world, I don't take shortcuts, I do my own checking instead of leaving it to someone who may be on minimum wage and has just finshed an 8 hour shift doing stock rotation.

Personally (and I realise that you aren't referring to me specifically) I do try not to 'poke fun' unless it's a case of 'I cocked up but it's not my fault' type of thread.

In this particular thread, I read it and thought 'it probably wouldn't have happened to me' but if it had, I'd have said to myself 'you silly sod, you should have checked the sell-by date' and thought no more about it.

Personally I gave up trusting M&S years ago, They've been trading on customer's memories of their value and quality for years after giving up attempting to provide earlier.

If I want top quality from a supermarket now I go to Booths, though it's not an MSE option sadly,

For those not in the north west Booths is an independent family-owned supermarket who recently beat selfridges and harrods to win a price for best food hall. But they're not cheap.

Speaking generally, I think what I'm trying to get across (with the complaints about 'perfect' posters), is that whilst we ultimately have to take responsibility for our own failure to check all the things that we need to check, in reality there are many times we don't simply because to do so would take so long and we are used to certain things being a certain way and hence make reasonable assumptions.

When there assumptions turn out - out of the blue - to be incorrect we cannot reasonably start accusing whomever is responsible of acting illegally nor can we expect compensation.

It does, however, seem perfectly reasonable to have a moan or 'vent'. There seem to be a lot of posters here (and you are not one of them) who delight in ridiculing anyone who does make such a complaint and who sanctimoniously inform them 'you should have checked'
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

In my world, I'll check the date on anything needing to go in the fridge, but even this isn't a foolproof system, and is prone to errors, especially if I'm in a hurry.

I bought a 4 pint of milk for home on Wednesday that I didn't realise the date was that on the bottle. It's in the fridge, and I've had it with a coffee this morning, and also fed it to my DD's. It's fine.

A 'use by' date is not the date that it needs to be used by.
