Sorry...you really think they have to reduce items?!
You'd probably be able to get a refund if you bought it on the 18th and the use by was 17th, but not if it was the 18th. Shops generally don't reduce a lot of the stuff until a few hours before closing time. That's why I go to Morrison's at 8pm :P

What date do you feel the product should be sold at full price until?

Perhaps you should change the thread title as the consensus is that the response from M&S is perfectly reasonable.

M&S customer has no valid reason to make a complaint.

I am surprised they actually complained.

The people at M&S head office were probably laughing when they read it.

Got to love the inadequates on here jumping on the bandwagon of criticising the OP!

Just what I was going to say when I saw the thread had been resurrected again.

The OP did not keep arguing the point so there was really no need for more and more people to pile in and have a go.

Some people really must lead very sad lives if they feel the need to validate themselves by joining a group of people who are really doing nothing more than kicking someone when they are down.

And many of them are criticising without even understanding the problem. If you shop at a premium outlet such as M&S you expect the food to be fresh.

The 'sell by' date is the last day on which the food is deemed saleable, not an indication that it is fresh on that date. If you know that new stock arrives with a sell by date 10 days in the future (as milk does), it's perfectly reasonable to be annoyed if they sell you some dated today as you can be sure it will not last any length of time once you get it home.

I don't think compensation is the answer but just because something is sold before the effective expiry date does not mean its acceptably fresh.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

But this was the whole point of the original post.
The OP didn't make any mention of the food in question being off, simply that they were upset because they were not offered a partial refund of any sort.

But generally, not the last day on which that food is deemed edible.

Provided that the sell by date is shown on the packaging, surely it is up to prospective purchasers to look and make a decision before they decide to buy.

OP chose to buy it, they didn't have to, they could have rejected it there and then if the date wasn't sufficiently long enough for their needs.

Their complaint wasn't the short life it was the fact it wasn't reduced. Presumably it doesn't become any fresher just because it's half price?
