Well, this batch if topsoil is just lovely, but seems super sterile. Just as well we filled the bottom with our much to save money. Our muck at the bottom is like a wormery. Wish we had some ready compost. Maybe I'll try a green manure in some of the planting gaps for a bit of 'life'.0

Rummer, I have been researching, and trying to get customers for our potential new business, as it looks as though the meeting last week with the wholesaler didn't go well, BUT I did learn something out of it, first thing, make sure your product has a logo or something saying where its from, so us it is wales, and the welsh dragon, so people know instantly it is a local product... second thing...even though the lady was lovely... and only doing her job, they practically expect you to produce/make an item and give it away, as the price she wanted me to try and match, would only leave me with pennies on a large order...
I know it is common knowledge that supermarkets etc are ruthless with pricing etc, and want the lions share of any money to be made, BUT it has really has opened my eyes... and will def go out of my way now to try and buy local, and support independent traders....
I have been phoning up about another produce/farmers market, but its on Saturday, so its a bit too short notice for me to organise how I would 'display' my wares lolWork to live= not live to work0 -
In anything related to animals the key marketing things are location, traceability, welfare and taste.
The people that are willing to pay reasonable prices like their food to be local sourced so they know they are supporting local business and that their carbon foot print is low. Traceability so they can see that animals can be traced back to source and are preferably born and raised in the same place. Welfare is so important to so many and highlighting the happy, healthy as close to nature life that animals have had is great. Taste often comes from a wonderful combination of these aspects as well as careful prep.
It sounds to me CTC as if you are doing everything the right way. You started small and have taken exceptional care of your animals and are now raising your own and exploring business options, I have no doubt you will find the ideal routes that suit youTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
by the way Rummer, it has nothing to do with the pigs lol... that will be for another day, ( I mean year) as I noticed in the smallholder show, and at the produce market I went to on Saturday... a lot of people are/trying to do pork...
In reality.. a produce market will only be good if I can pick up some key customers... just to get the product off the ground...
so I need to look at something else to run along side it, if I am to do markets on a regular basis.. I know it was too late to think about it last year,( we did talk about it on here ) but Holly.... near to Christmas.... and instead of chopping down the horrible crab apple tree, try and get some mistletoe juice to stick on it ..lol
so I need to find out how do I sell it, bunch etc and how much to charge.. there will be a mix of green and variegated ( I know where there is some 'winks')Work to live= not live to work0 -

evening all...... what a mad day.. first off i have 2 little dogs dropped off [ dog walker friend picks them up from owner, walks them, then drops to me] at 8am tues, weds, thurs. i take them with me for the day with mine. she is ALWAYS punctual... this morning by 9am and no phone contact i started to worry she was on the forest injured...:o but she had locked herself out of her car ! she had 6 dogs and her phone was in car  so another local dog walker broke into it for her eventually.... THEN my golden lab had a funny turn  wandering round disorientated, panting and peeing constantly
rushed her to vets and he thinks she has a urine infection... injection plus tablets ... if no improvement in 48 hrs gotta take her back.. then realised id left my bank card at home  so went back to work, dropped the 2 dogs home, then raced over to pay bill... rush hour traffic
just got home... old girl seems a bit brighter now so fingers crossed. the 2 labs are 13 now and a bit arthritic
phew.. glad to sit down. CTC... if you can sell it i can get you a van full of misteltoe
also friend would like to order some bacon and chops and sausages x2 if possible
aswell as me
