LIR That looks fabulous :j:j:j the stones look amazing! What colour are you going to make the wood?

More wild thyme. Round these parts of the county its called rates farm blue. (?)

By the time you've painted the first 100 metres or so of a colour it starts to get noticed. :rotfl:

We had masonary paint mixed up to match. After a while its like a sort of snow blindness one gets painting here. We slacked off a bit this summer tbh.

Just had a phone call from DS1. He's ok. Done his first milking (80 cows in a rotary parlour) the farm is in the top 5% for milk production and has 500 cows that live out. Struggling a bit with jet lag but he's getting there.

DS2 is getting ready for his turkeys coming. CTC is that something you could do for Christmas? I've got to go and get the food and bedding today.

Off to meet some family this afternoon and then for a walk to Dunstanburgh Castle.

  • Just bought a 2200W petrol generator. Don't believe they'll be able to avoid power cuts this winter, despite forcing big factories off the grid to maintain the façade that we have energy security in Britain.

I'd like a genny, but there are so many other things I need before that, so at the moment, if the lights go out, it's just our hard luck. :(

Assuming we get it going again, the Aga needs no power, the woodburner can function too and we have our own gas for the hob, so not too bad. :D

From what I can see, if we go for a high end pellet boiler, there won't be much change from £20k, by the time we've re plumbed all new rads as well.

OTOH, over the next 7 years we could expect to get around £15k back from HM government :), whereas if we put in the oil system, there will only be about £1200 overall income from the thermal panels. :(

Any of these systems would need leccy to run, hence our insistence on keeping the wood burner. ;)

I plan to install a 'backup' set of sockets around the garage, so that'll keep the big freezer and C/H boiler powered, then a spur into the cloakroom from where I can run wander leads for lights, charge the laptop etc.

I'm also building up a stock of Bank of England £20s, strange days in Scotland...

Frankly, this year we're pretty stuffed in power cuts, for time since being here!

Our flue from wood burner that's kept us going all this time needs replacing, and we haven't sorted out fireplace in cheese room or study. If the worst came to the worst we could cobble something together in the cheese room.
