CTC - read "Around a pound a week" published by persephone sometime. OK that was London 1911 but rural areas were not a lot better and worse sometimes.
Hi RAS, I've got that in my To Be Read pile back at home. Here's the link to it at Persephone Books.0 -

The last few days dry, warm weather has started the autumnal colours on trees around my way. If it keeps nice through Sep as forecast, maybe get some picturesque scenes around Scotland.
Just finished planting the Arrow bamboo (Pseudosasa japonica) to replace the screening provided by the laurel but planted in a 45l 'Rootex' bag, so hopefully the copper in the bag's fabric will stop burst out. It was a little pot bound and just teasing out the circling roots you could tell they were like steel...Anyway a guess in a couple of seasons will know it it's worked.0 -
i used to have a dolls house shop.:D trouble is i know the % mark up on stock !! i did well because i took up to 50% off rrp. i can still get trade on some things. i used to sell specialist houses too. some cost over £2,000. to be honest there is a "name" market the same as in "big" life. people pay silly money for furnishings cos of a name. i had local people handmake beautifully skilled work. at a fraction of the cost and it was a labour of love for them. i took 10% as they did all the work.... they were happy.
p.s. DHE % =100 to 150% mark up
Oh I'm sure Alfie, but for having a look it's an ok starting point. I would have loved to see your shop. I prefer to go to the shows and meet the makers now. You're right you pay for the name a lot and I confess to having some of said names pieces! But I also do my own things, especially needlepoint. I do love it but such an expensive hobby.0 -
The architect and structural engineer have returned, having gone awol from the middle of August. We're keeping our cool, as there's s*d-all we can do about their tardiness.
The engineer knows we need his calcs before we can order the steels, so even if he provides them today, we'll likely have to wait for them to be fabricated.
Here, the alternative kitchen in the man-cave/boiler room is fully functional, so we can pull the roof off the real one any time. With it being darned close to a grass frost this morning, I can see that being a load of fun! :rotfl:
All our visitors have flown. I thought they'd taken the swallows, but saw a few after unlocking the chickens.
Yesterday, someone mentioned the P word....:eek:0 -
It's snuggly fun when its cold if its short term davesnave.
We have a roofer coming this morning. Please, please, please wish me luck, resident parent has a bucket in the middle of bedroom floor when it rains, we need to get these temp repairs done quickly.0 -

DW feels the cold, terribly. She doesn't feel like 'fun' when it's cold!!!:rotfl:
Good luck. We have a bucket next to the chimney in the loft, but I only need to empty it occasionally. It was here when we arrived, neatly hidden by an old doll's house.0 -

Most of my medical stuff is worse in the cold but I still think its snuggly fun. ( so long as I have an electric blanket and several dozen layers on the bed). Some of the fun things are stripping naked for bed and snuggling up for warmth ' by necessity' and pulling your long johns into bed at night so they are warm to get into the next morning.
My scan this year showed that as well as nuerological pain in the last two years I have suffered a lot of degenerative problems in my spine. There is no reason for that other than lack of fitness, weight gain and probably arthritis.maybe awkward moving from when the neurologal problems are bad.
My least favourite thing about cold weather are the reynauds nipples ( which I thought was some kind of snow predictive thing till it was still happening in July). That smarts quite a lot! Tn or TGN is worse in winter, but in some twisted way I am kind of 'familiar' with it now. I won't say friend, that's not healthy, but more like...'oh, yeah...you, I know you, you're not going anywhere so let's learn to rub along together, huh?'0 -
Dave that is a breathtaking sculpture. So very moving indeed.
Alfie - hope Mum's on the mend. What a time you've had - I'm not surprised that you're pooped.
OH didn't manage to get the track finished before the digger went off, but we will get the bigger digger- hopefully soon.
Lost a couple of days as we were barraged with some pretty offensive emails from a very difficult client. OH would'nt be drawn, so I was replying & being subjected to some really not nice stuff by both the client & their father. I have not had that before & they were copying their hideous missives to all & sundry. The work hasn't even started so goodness knows what they are going to turn into then. We've told them that we won't be doing any further work - well you couldn't could you? Thing is the guy is semi-well known. I started to feel that things were getting a bit sinister & really quite disturbing.
I didn't get much sleep the night before. OH sleeps like a log - a snoring log! Why are people such wind up merchants?
LIR - sorry for your pain. I do mindfullness for my chronic condition & that has parts of welcoming the pain into your house - sort of thing, so I do know what you mean. But it is a bastward at times. I am still feeling the shingles, but less so.
Dull & overcast here & still feeling rather 'wounded' after the verbal abuse, so pottering, rather than 'big jobs'.0 -
Pains really not that bad ATM choille. Is worse in cold, but snuggling is fun.
The pills have kept it pretty under control most of summer. Had some creeping back when the weather turned. Main enemy ATM is fatigue and cramps but, that's physically really less bad, just draining. Psychologically its funnily much, much harder than pain. But you win some you lose some. One should never be ungrateful for having had some time off pain! And I'm not! I just would like some energy to get on with stuff!0
