Rummer have a look at the dolls house emporium too as they're one of the most reasonable for standard items. Then look at miniatura and their exhibitors and their websites for inspiration, lots of drool worthy things. I'm a bit of a dollshouse nut too-3 houses and about 6 shops. 1/12, 1/24th and 1/48th scale. I love it and Alfie will tell you it can be quite addictive. My dining room table and chairs in my dollshouse cost more than my real one! Have fun
i used to have a dolls house shop.:D trouble is i know the % mark up on stock !! i did well because i took up to 50% off rrp. i can still get trade on some things. i used to sell specialist houses too. some cost over £2,000. to be honest there is a "name" market the same as in "big" life. people pay silly money for furnishings cos of a name. i had local people handmake beautifully skilled work. at a fraction of the cost and it was a labour of love for them. i took 10% as they did all the work.... they were happy. :) p.s. DHE % =100 to 150% mark up

In the jewellery trade, when DW worked in it, the mark up was 2.65 times the wholesale price.

One reason for our roof work being cheap is that wood has been sourced at 50% of retail, and our builder's passing it all on. :D

Unfortunately, I cant persuade the plumbers & electricians to do likewise! :rotfl:

PS My picture's a bit fuzzy because flash photography is forbidden, so I had to stand v. still. I wasn't still enough!

Forgot to mention, the postman cut the hedges yesterday, early, when the road & lane were quiet. It's amazing what a difference this has made, as little views have been restored and the feeling of enclosure has lifted.:D

Like his predecessors, Mr Postman was quick to suggest we have all the trees along the road cut right back, "Then t'will be a nice, tidy 'edge."

I'm not buying it. OK, I know we have to take the overhangers down soon, but what is the huge advantage in lowering all the trees to hedge height, apart from making it easier for guys like him to cut?

Wouldn't be a problem, as there will be blokes everywhere removing bits and pieces all the time just now.....but there's a formidable old biddy in a twin set who takes your ticket, and no one gets past her....:(:cool::rotfl:

I was impressed with this sculpture built into the walls, representing the stonemasons and other workers who signed-up in 1914, left the site and never returned to see the job completed....

On a different note, the huge amount of work they're doing now, only 100 years on, is only necessary because some of the building materials used were not properly understood. The castle has leaked for most of it's lifetime.
  • wow that picture really does stop and make you think.. about how many and what we lost in the first world war...

I wonder what those men and boys who signed up to fight for their king and country would think of our country now??

    I've been Money Tipped!
Like I am spoken, we are getting a skip to day. I am ready to put special girl's ragged rugs in it now. And other associated junk not worth giving away or saving. And other junk from yard and barns can be put in it. A skip will barely scratch the surface :). But make us feel a bit proactive :). And I'll feel better for having dealt with the big horse's stuff. Its still such a hole, its unreal. The other horse, her rugs are in use on paying guests!

The stonemason picture is to me very poignant.

That's my feeling too. It stopped me in my tracks.

There are letters an memorandums on display recording how the men had been gathered together and encouraged to join "one of the two services." Quite a few signed-up.

There were farm workers there too, so a few men who remained at the construction site were loaned to local farmers to make sure the harvesting wasn't affected.

I'm sure those men wouldn't recognise much of modern-day Britain, but that's not necessarily a negative statement. It depends on a person's viewpoint. Given the option, I'd not wish to return to pre-WW1 Britain. :)

CTC - read "Around a pound a week" published by persephone sometime. OK that was London 1911 but rural areas were not a lot better and worse sometimes.
