Must admit I fancied NZ myself at that age, though given my relatives' track record of going there and falling off Mt Cook, maybe it was better I had no particular reason to go! I would not have been mountaineering, but there are other ways to be unlucky. :(

Nearer to home, I forgot to mention that Pete came and cut the hay while we were away in Brum, so with any luck, it'll be baled tomorrow. :D Here, it's dry, but breezy and not overly warm, so quite comfortable.

Speaking of Brum, I woke on Thursday last at around 6am and, as usual, heard a chicken or two clucking away. Then it dawned on me! :rotfl: The neighbours two doors up at DD1's old place have a few hens. They also keep bees and sell honey. All this on a very twee estate with little 35' gardens, though I suppose that's quite decent these days. I was surprising to see how much veg growing was going on behind those immaculate frontages too. ;)

The winter storms affected our favourite beach here quite badly by sweeping away the slipway ramp and part of its protective wall. There was no public access; just a sheer drop of about 25'. :(

It's a small cove not far from Clovelly, but without the kudos of that venue, so we wondered what would happen and who'd put the money up for a repair.

Last night, we nipped over there to take a look, fully expecting to see nothing done. On arriving, we met a little lad aged about 6, so we asked him what the situation was.

"Oh, my Daddy fixed that," he said, "with my uncle and my grandad. But it was mainly my Daddy!" :A

We wondered if he was having us on, but sure enough, there was scaffolding there, with an access ramp on it and a notice proudly proclaimed this temporary repair, which had opened only 24 hours previously. Permanent repairs will follow.....:)

The tide was right in and there was no beach! :rotfl:We didn't mind though, just this once. We hadn't even checked, such was our pessimism. :o

    evening all,

nice and cool now, dare I say it, I think I might need a blanket tonight lol...

even though we now have a 4 day week in work, the 3 day weekend goes really quick...

Bumped into the stonemason's OH today, and she said he is hoping to back here on Tuesday, he hasn't been here for about a month, as his kids were over from New Zealand...

Hopefully will have the carpenter here tomorrow to give us a price.. and fingers crossed it shouldn't be too long before things will be shifting along again...

Hopeful for better weather today :D

My gorgeous boy decided that I should get up just after 6am today _pale_ however it was clearly too early for him as he has just gone back to bed :rotfl: As tempted as I am to go back for some sleep myself I think I will just enjoy the peace for a while!

Years ago my grandpa used a spray on his hedge to prevent it from regrowing when it had been cut at the start of the summer, do you still get such a thing and is it safe to use?? It would be ideal for us as the hedge is massive and as bargainous as our gardener was to keep up the cutting schedule would finish us!

    You mean Scotts Cutlass.

Like a lot of garden chemicals, it's been withdrawn.

What sort of hedge is it? Some will take heavy pruning, but then you have a disposal problem, of course. At the last house, I reduced my privet hedges by half in width and a quarter in height.

Dull & drizzling here. Not what Pete will want to see, but drier later and good tomorrow, apparently. By next week we should see some decent rain, which will be most beneficial, even if it starts the weeds off again. :)

Had to shut up friend's 4 chickens the other night. She had a lot of bother with red mite, till she made a coop out of one of these:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-220lt-plastic-barrel-drum-with-plastic-lid-and-metal-clasp-/161371261796?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item25927a0b64

The lid (with air holes!) fits on and locks with the metal clasp, making the coop impregnable to fox attack. The whole thing stands horizontally on a big wooden saw-horse type structure and there are two perches that pass through holes in the sides. There's a ramp leading up to it, of course.

    Ingenious! :A

Porche - she looks very regal.

    Overcast here & thankfully cooler.

Still waking up feeling exhausted & eyes gummed together.
