  • As someone who has been toying the idea at intervals for some time of having a pond, that mention of Blandford flies got me thinking "Are there aspects of having a pond I havent thought of?".

Would there be likely to be clouds of flies attracted into my garden if I had one? I think I might have a rethink if so...

....And it looks as if the fly will be returning in numbers to the Blandford area quite soon. :(

I think we'll have more flies here this year. Swallow numbers are well down. They had a good 2013, so I don't think the problem's here.

    Who can tell?

Every action has reaction, but we used to keep just a couple of fish, which kept our old pond clear of most small larvae, without apparently impacting on dragonflies & damsel flies etc. :)

    morning all,

need your thoughts on this one, or am i just off the plot lol

my quail are laying.... but i have noticed, the run that i have taken the male out of as he was a bit of a bully, i am getting a load more eggs than the ones that have a male running with the hens, is it just a fluke or do you think there is something in it, or is just one of those things

I've no idea, but our hens are running with (from!:rotfl:) a cockerel and we've never had such a regular supply. :D

Perhaps of he was being mean they were too stressed to lay?

I built a pond in our garden and it developed a hole so is now partially filled with green sludge. It doesn't attract any flies though. Just remember if you are building a pond to not make the same mistake I did and to Use A Spirit Level. My pond is squint :o

Lashing with rain here today :( one day was tolerable however I now feel that mother nature is taking it too far :rotfl: I want sunshine back!

Well, we've had the septic tank man here and he didn't have a big enough lorry to completely empty them both.:( They're huge!

At one stage the stuff was flowing from one tank to the other(?) via the connecting outflow, so the idea of doing just one's own this time around was a non-starter. So is any idea of some farmer coming here and doing an illegal 'slurp.'

Basically, we should have had them emptied them last year, but we didn't have the experience.:o The owner of next door claimed they 'don't hardly ever need doing,' so no help there, though they've owned the place donkey's years.

Now I hear the tenant is baulking over payment....

.....And the outflow still needs jetting too.

This one could run and run.:wall:

Dave having to share things with neighbours can often be a headache, you have my sympathy.

Stopped raining here and it is due to be dry tomorrow so I might get back out into the garden again :j

Dry here too this pm, just in time for my bonfire, as the wind might not stay favourable too long. I've reclaimed my polytunnel space, but it does make a great place to dry out dumpy bags of weeds. :D

Landlady of next door will be here soon. A 3 way meeting with her and tenant promises to be a bundle of laughs!

One piece of good news is that another sort-of -neighbour and friend in the barn conversions has finally sold it. With the web of intrigue that goes on down there, we may currently be the only people who know. I can scarcely remember the last time one of those sold. ....Many others have tried.....:(

Oh, and I've found out who pulls all the 'For Sale' boards down, shortly after the agents put them up! ;)

I tell you, we are surrounded by mad people! :rotfl:
