Sadly no - can't stop the leak - anything else I can try Dave?

    Only the main stopc0ck....

....Or can you somehow 'capture' the water that's coming out, by wrapping a bit of material round the pipe and feeding it into a bucket, or something?

EDIT: Stopc0ck goes clockwise, if it's the old kind. I think the new kind with a knob do too. But you will know when you try....

P.S. I only said anticlockwise on the in-line valve, because it looked slightly out of alignment that way in the photo. You could experiment.....:eek::eek:

Thanks for the suggestions Dave. Much appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in replying - lappy playing up. Have tried the screw both ways until water squirts out - got an unscheduled little shower!! But despite lots of fiddling can't get the leak to stop.

Will have a go with the stopc0ck - hopefully that will help - at least I know where it is. The pipe is of course in an awkward place - well it's the waste pipe which means it is hard to get anything underneath to catch the leak. Got a shallow bowl there atm with a flannel to channel the water but it will soon fill up. Mr BD should be home soon so between us I expect we can sort something out.

Good start to the BH weekend!! At least I noticed the wet patch in the kitchen - must have been leaking since Weds.

Thanks again for your help :beer:

Those service-valves do bypass very easily, usually because some crud has got washed into it.

You could try putting a towel over the top to soak up the water then turn it 90 degree one way then back again and the other way, water will scoosh out when the valve is in the open position. Then try turning it slowly so the screw slot is across the pipe and see if you can find a position where it'll stay dry.

IMHO the plumber has been naughty leave you with just a service valve to stop the water, he should have capped off the top too if he couldn't do the job in one visit

Anyhow, just got it from the garden, quite literally working by the illumination of the security lights. :D

Reason being the lawn chap rang to say he could do the turf laying tomorrow, I'd expected another fortnight to finish planting the borders!

Don't want to be trampling about on newly laid turf, so big push to finish the main planting - alarm clock set for silly o'clock tomorrow

Mme Alfred Carrière arrived from David Austin this morning, so that was good timing! The rose, an evergreen clematis, perpetual sweet-pea and honeysuckle are now placed to go up and over the pergola.

I'm going to chance it with a late frost, so first thing will plant out dahlias and cannas and be ready to fleece if needed.

Many thanks for the advice, felt really at sea not understanding how the valve worked. Mr BD got home a little while ago and had a good fiddle around with it and we have now reduced the leak to a much more manageable level.

I think the plumber will be mortified when we tell him what has happened. Normally I would be cross to put it mildly. However, he did some work for us a few years ago which was excellent. And didn't charge us for an emergency weekend call out when Mr BD dropped a suitcase on a pipe in the loft and caused a mega leak.

The plumber has been rather poorly and has done a couple of half days of work and was at the doctors today and due to go to the hospital for tests on Monday. I suspect the tests have been bought forward. I think that really he shouldn't have been working at all, but didn't want to let us down, and so made a start on the job.

Anyhoo, thanks all for the advice - really appreciated - plumbing has always seemed to be a bit of a 'dark art' to me :o:o, but OTOH I do have four very happy chickens - so can do something right.....each to his own....

Thanks CTC not woken up to a flood, thank goodness, so touch wood the leak is stable now. Seems to be a plumbing theme atm what with Dave's Great Drain Robbery over the last few days.

My sympathies with your lack of sleep CTC. I went to the sleep clinic a few years ago - they couldn't really help much, but I do take sleeping tablets when needed. When you do get a good nights sleep it makes you realise how grotty you feel when sleep deprived.

Been chilly here the last few days, but forecast is for a bit warmer weekend, hope to get some small plants out into the beds.

Back to bed now to sleep off the remains of the sleeping tablet I had last night ;)

Oh, that's good, I'm glad you got it to stabilise. :T

I'm just drafting a letter to LL of next door right now. I'm going to ask her to do an inspection of her tank at regular 6 month intervals, or accept the consequences.:p

She'll also be called out if we get any repeat of the over- use of water by next door. :D

I have been far too kind. :A

thanks BD... I must admit the best night sleep I had in ages was when we went out a couple of weeks ago, slept up the ranch, and got up at 2.50pm lol.... must admit I have been thinking of trying that nitol stuff... but will go back to having a milky hot chocolate before bed, to see if that will help..

    grey and overcast here...

we bought 3 mini auto drinkers, very similar to these

for the quail, hubby bought them a farm supplies store on his rounds, so he is going to adapt them to all feed off one water container...

I personally find the normal poultry water drinkers are a bit carp with my quail.

Just a bit fed up ATM, but this place keeps us on our toes....

Yesterday pm, next door's kids asked if they could go play in the field and "get some sticks." DW was delighted they were actually outdoors and running about, bearing in mind that they can go weeks without leaving the confines of their bungalow. She left them to it.

I was pleased to hear them too, until I looked down to see they'd gone over the fence at the bottom and were merrily breaking off the only bits of hedge I'd laid this winter!

I got there before much damage was done.

"We thought they'd just blown over like that," said the eldest aged 13, going on 14.

She was telling the truth. They really are that stupid, not because of any lack of intelligence, but with no school and little experience of the real world, they can't evaluate anything they see like 'normal' children would.

They'll be like lambs to the slaughter when they finally escape parental control. :(
