It's been nice enough here, but we're due rain later. We have been working out how many more trees need stakes and ordering horticultural stuff.
Septic tank run-out isn't running out properly somehow, so I have the joy of investigating that now.
Last summer it ran out fine, to the extent that the field was saturated.:( That was definitely the neighbour doing something odd with their water.
This could be very different. Drain rods at the ready......
I have open flowers on a few of my tomatoes.:D0 -
Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggggghhhhhh!!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek:
Sorry!:o:o
I've just upset the landlady of the folk next door, who, even though it's not her responsibility, is angry that I've arranged for both septic tanks to be emptied tomorrow.:(:(
That's the tanks located in our garden, their tank and ours.
Once I realised we had a problem with the run-out that I couldn't rod, I made the mistake of phoning next-door's LL to see if she knew anyone reliable. As she wasn't answering her home phone or mobile, I left a message and made arrangements with the nearest firm......pronto.
Wrong!:o:o Terrible Devon faux-pas!
Apparently, I should have realised she'd know farmers who could do this. Well, they probably couldn't jet the run-out, but they could collect the poo and blast it over the corner of some forgotten field.
OK, maybe, but for all I knew she was in the South of France, and there's a Bank Holiday coming-up. How would she like to be bog-less for 3 days? Hmmm, thought not!
And anyway, it really doesn't matter....:D
The family next door are the ones who'll pay, as they don't have sewerage charges, same as all of us with septic tanks. They'll also have to help pay for the jetting of the run-out too, which is probably fair, as their tank is the one that's in a bit of a state....and they were the ones that used an incredible amount of water last summer. They can look at me as innocently as they like, but the excess ends up in the little paddock, so I know!:p
Half an hour of ear-bending, and I still kept my temper, but only just! :rotfl:0 -
 Dave  How awful!
The rain started at lunch time and has been going on and on and on all dayAh well at least I don't have to water the garden :rotfl:

Davesnave.. I am proud of you for keeping your cool, I would have lost it within 2 seconds flat lol...
very warm and humid here, have had a couple of showers, but its tomorrow I think we are going to get a soakingWork to live= not live to work0 -
Trying something new here...may not work! Was puzzling about how to support plants growing up and over pergola. I didn't want to just wrap the posts in wire mesh so came up with idea of making a 'slinky' from 2mm aluminium wire and dropping that over the post, it's secured at intervals down the reverse side -
Hopefully the climbers can get weave in and out of the spiral as they grow up.
Also and apologies for awful pic, anyone know what daff this is - it's about 40cm tall and there's multiple flowers per stem. I'd like to get more bulbs this autumn but have lost the name0 -
We didn't go to the lottie today, as I needed to rest up in the morning after yesterday's efforts of weeding round the rhubarb. By time we might have gone the clouds were coming over, so OH started digging in the garden to get space ready for the main crop spuds. I was going to do some seed planting, but was so weary and cold I didn't.
All I did was put some seeds to soak in tepid water overnight ready to plant tomorrow.
But I did go out late in the afternoon to keep OH company, and encourage him, and make some suggestions (which I think he did actually find useful).
Edit: photo edited out0 -
Maggie Every contribution helps! I do enjoy being in a supervisory role however I am for enough to work and my OH does not take direction well :rotfl:
The garden is bringing me so much joy this yearit is good to be out digging in the soil, ripping out weeds and making the whole space better. What has made it even better is sharing it all with my family, even the cats have been joining us while we work.

We really miss our old pond, but I'm unsure about building one here, close to the house, encouraging frogs & toads into a heavy strimming area.
At present, we have very few, probably because there are no suitable breeding places within easy reach. The stream is no good for that, nor was the 'pond' we filled-in at the Dog End.
OTOH, maybe a few strimmed frogs is a price worth paying for a needed facility? :think:0 -
As someone suffering a bad early influx of blandford flies this spring I'm glad that as yet we have no pond close to the house!0
