We saw a Little Owl last week, when driving along the main road at about 9pm.
It was just sitting in the road, so DW needed to brake quite hard to stop in time. It may have been dazzled, but as soon as we pulled-up and dipped the lights, it took off and landed in a tree nearby, apparently not that concerned.
Owls hunt around here frequently, but that's the first time I've seen that species.
Currently not sure if the swallows have arrived yet, as we may only have House Martins. If only they'd stay still! :rotfl:
We have do drive down a long country lane to get to our local WWT and there is often a little owl sat high up on the telegraph pole. I didn't realise any owls were about in the daytime but I think the little owl is. You get a much better view of them during the daytime because as you say at night time it's usually the flash of headlights that startles them and then they are off. Lovely birds.0 -
I have just come home to an explosion of baby quails lol... loads of them have hatched out PLUS I complained to the seller I had a few cracked eggs when they arrived, so I received 36 eggs in the post this morning lol...
I have read that quail hatching rate is quite low, so I thought my fish tank/viv brooder would be enough.... don't think so, so going to go to poundstretcher now, and buy 2 of those big deep plastic storage containers... to tie me over..
will prob need one of them anyway, to place the incubator in when I take the top of it off, as I think these little monkeys will run everywhere lol...Work to live= not live to work0 -
That's amazing CTC!0

Well done on the quails CTC, the first time I saw newly hatched ones I thought they were like bumble bees! Also know the dread of work feeling, hubby too, but when I get that feeling here now I'm working for myself so I have to tell myself to get on with it!
I must admit as time goes on I get more and more confident in everything we're doing, it's really empowering to overcome a fear or conquer a new challenge.
Love the pups Lucielle, all of my dogs are collie types, but absolutely no room for any more!
Congrats on lambing choille, good to have you back, hope you're both on the mend?
Rozee the house looks a-mazing! I love vaulted ceilings and big windows, my mum did a small extension like that, it's fab.
Been totally manic here, weather playing games with my plans! 2 days in a row the 4 boy sheep have escaped into my arch enemy neighbours place, both days I was at least an hour away, luckily another neighbour who is friends with both of us has come to the rescue!
Went a bit mad on that good life website with the bare root plants, have a decent little order en-route! I've also just looked for some bare root roses, far cheaper than potted ones, to replace the ones I've lost over the winter to weather and also chewing dogs! Finally a little order with Sarah raven, love her plants for cutting, will treat myself to a few more...!
Got that allotment thing on in the background, it is mostly rubbish, was hoping for more...not a patch on bake off! Might see if there's any info on plants/varieties on-line, you catch glimpses of their patches but there's not much factual help on the programme.
I really need a whole day at the gardening, but rest of today is reserved for tidying, cleaning, organising...deep joy!0 -
Quails CTC - amazing wee things. i would think they'll have to be kept under cover.
My other half has eventually been diagnosed with a blood disorder that has affected his joints. He can just manage a shuffle. It's treated with him having blood taken off every two weeks.
He's been in pain & getting worse for two years but got no where until quite recently. It's so frustrating & painful for him. His joints will improve once hos iron levels have been reduced down to more normal levels but he has to go for al sorts of tests as it can affect kidneys etc. It's been scary & also disabling.
The weather does seem a lot drier (fingers crossed) lovely seeing all the lambs charging around.0 -
Oh no, poor on choille.
Is the prognosis once his iron has been righted that he will be more comfortable?0 -
((((Choille)))) So sorry to hear about your OH, hopefully the treatment will give him some relief.
CTC How exciting about the quails :j
Rumlet and I had a bit of a duvet day today which was lovely as DD was back at school and hubby returned to work. Tomorrow however we need to get out and about before I become part of the couch :rotfl:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
choille very sorry to hear your OH is so poorly, chronic pain is no joke and can really drag you down. I do hope he starts to improve now the underlying problem has been identified.
CTC I love the image of an ''explosion of quails'' - and it's lovely to have something so nice to make you smile when work is so difficult.
Dave - you've been quiet today - got the Outlaws visiting did you say?ferretkeeper wrote: »Went a bit mad on that good life website with the bare root plants, have a decent little order en-route! Me too:D:D:D
I have potted up the first half of the order and they are already begining to bud. The second half arrived very dry, and I think I may lose some, the berberis looks very dead, but you never know. I emailed Leadthegoodlife and they have noted my account and asked me to let them know if any of the plants don't make it. The prices were fantastic and exceeded my ability to resist :rotfl::rotfl:
Mr BD has come home very happy this evening having made his annual pilgramage to the Bury St Edmunds beer festival run by CAMRA. He forced himself to try out 12 different beers.:beer::beer:
Bloomin' Bathstore didn't ring today to sort out 'cisterngate' even tho' they promised they would :mad:It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

'Fraid so, though they suddenly went off shopping mid-morning, taking DW with them.
I took the opportunity to go down to the Dog End and plant my long row of comfrey. ;)Then, I cleaned out a big blue barrel, which had held some sort of solidified soapy stuff, and popped that down there. It'll be my comfrey tea barrel.
I'd planned to let the Dog End look after itself. The couch grass is clothing much of it already, and the small decorative comfrey covers areas by the stream, but there are still patches of bare soil + weeds, so I've decided to sow a bit of grass seed on those. It's nice to have an area where nettles don't matter, but I'm not allowing brambles beyond the hedge.0 -
Glad Mr choille has had an accurate diagnosis at last, and thus some hope of relief for his pain. It's worrying enough when faced with any kind of debilitating illness, but when the cause is a mystery, doubly scary.
I have a friend in that position ATM. He keeps going for tests, but still no concrete news. It's all very unsettling.
I hope Mr choille soon responds to treatment and feels years younger.0
