Are you around Phoebe? Wondering how the massive house renovation project is going or whether you're lying under a pile of rubble somewhere despairing about the house ever being finished?
Building won't faze phoebe. Unfortunately, it's likely to be elderly parent issues.0 -
Taking things a bit easier today, although managed a trip to Travis Perkins for more aggregates. Other than, just been pottering in the garden and am awaiting things to cool off a bit before thinking about concreting in the pergola supports.0

Not a pet, not a pet, not a pet.
Reasonably pleased today. Got half the right side of the track cleared and sown with wild flower seeds, we can continue that in the rail tomorrow. The Harry baker blossom is out and I was right, its aesthetically PERFECT where it is. I am also in love with the quince. Not only does its light foliage look amazing next to the dark of the Harry baker but its just beautiful in its own right. I have missed having a quince. I am painfully aware its very visible from the road. At our last house our quinces used to get picked by people who were NOT us. I am feeling the urge to fence areas I don't want to look to domestic! I don't really mind now that I haven't left room for the second quince next to it later, though.
Two more bonfires to day two. Barrows and barrows of nettle root, but also, on an 80 /20 effort principle we have started dealing with the last of the leylandi wood in the back garden and burning some that are just too much effort to get wood burner ready for time, as well as the uprooted stumps., Three stumps we cannot move at all, but think once the last of the wood pile is moved we might burn in situ if we can do that before first of the straw comes in. ( after straw comes in its too close for comfort to burn there.)
We have planted a couple of odd things.....a lilac we've had in a pot, a few other pots. We're dithering about where to pot the forest pansy, I am thinking of potting it into a bigger pot till we can decide. And a spruce we've been gifted just cannot get through the ground where we want to plant, so willhave to wait for the digger. Finally, we have a verbena tree. Not sure what type exactly, but its been languishing here in a pot for some years and I have suggested to its owner we plant it here as its suffering and they say yes. Its not something I would buy really, not without knowing what at least. Not sure where to stick that in at all.
Did some spraying and hand weeding in that bloody herb garden to be. Taking a drink break then we'll do more logs this evening.0 -

Quinces being picked by "people who are not us" has to be a sight more "tactful" language than I would use instead of "stolen/nicked/half-inched" or whatever other word I would have used personally after steadfastly accidently on purpose hanging out nearby with something suitable (watering can of something nasty-smelling?:rotfl:).
Thankfully, my particular location gives me (and the neighbours) the chance to spot a strange face coming anywhere near quite some way off and at least one of us would likely be visibly watching to see which one of our houses someone walking near them was coming to visit. One advantage of my set-up is that I can be straight out readily to see who it is coming to see me personally the second anyone hoves near my house:rotfl:, as a couple of people know when I went out to greet "MY visitor" when they came nearby;) and was "surprised" to see they weren't;) and could easily happen to decide to use my hosepipe on the garden at that point....
Fruit trees coming here soon and some edible underplanting:) and I should have a lot more edibles out there soon:). Saving myself some money already on vegetables:T0 -
No bonfires for us because the wind is wrong, but there are 3 dumpy bags of weeds in the poly waiting until conditions change. The warm, wet winter had to be paid for.
I think we are almost on top of things, but it's dangerous, saying that!
Like you, lir, I have a 'not a pet' blackbird, which sits alongside me when I'm weed-digging, twittering away, as they do, under his breath. Mostly, I don't see the morsels I unearth, but he nips out and magics them up from what looks like bare earth.Between him and the moles it's a wonder we have any worms at all!
The pigeons tried to nest in the barn as usual. Because it's now enclosed, the jackdaws wouldn't come in to steal their twigs, so I had to do the dirty deed and knock them down with a pole each evening instead. They eventually got the message and seem to have gone to the Thatcher's barn instead.
Unfortunately, the swallows will miss out altogether now we've put doors on 'their' end of the barn. It was never a safe location, but they raised 3 chicks to adulthood last year after losing out to a cat the year before. There won't be much pressure on nesting spots anyway, by the look of it. Very few of them here so far....:(
I was a bit perturbed when I heard a new bark from the Dog End yesterday, but a bit of boundary walking confirms that there are visitors there who have brought their own mutt along. I'd do brushcutter reveille tomorrow, were it not for their long suffering neighbours, who are probably already worn to a frazzle by the grandchildren who've been staying all week. :rotfl:0 -
Spent afternoon at lottie. They had a work day just over a week ago that we didn't manage to get to as were at caravan. They noticed OH had started trying to dig up old carpet on plot, so 3 of them (2 closest neighbours) went for it! It was much worse than they imagined  apparently 5 carpets! We still have to weed it all, but it will be much easier.
My back is killing me. Did time in garden yesterday, so cumulative effect.
Tomorrow if it isn't raining OH might plant 2nd earlies at lottie, but I will just be inspecting the plot.I've reached the point of my back really really needs a break from weeding.
Off to watch Casualty now!0 -
Hello dreamers
Another gorgeous day here today that we spent sorting out the garden. In fact friends who came round complimented us on how good it was lookingI keep smiling to myself!
Today I tried to clear the raised beds and they are coated in a horrid grass that is a nightmare to dig outI even preferred the creeping buttercups!
Rumlet sat in his bouncy chair taking in everything and it was the most contented I have ever seen him, I am hopeful that I have an outdoor loving boy! Even my DD got stuck in today which was heart warming although I did have to come up with an ever changing range of activities :rotfl:
Tomorrow I am going to tackle the remaining raised bedsTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Morning all.
Been a bit poorly so resting up to try and get some energy to do something with the bare-root plants that arrived in the week. Expected them to be twigs but they are a good size.Garden is bare, so these will be handy to start some planting up.
Seedlings coming on slowly as it is so chilly. Ordered some lavender plug plants which arrived black and dead apart from two.Ordered a new book for my brother which arrived with a tatty, creased dust cover and marked. Not impressed. Not sure if I can return as via Amazon marketplace.
Old dog has been poorly too. Went to the vets again yesterday. She now has some zantac liquid to take before meals which will hopefully help to settle her tummy. She also has a trainer sock on one of her feet as she has started her neurotic licking again.
Had the guttering replaced on the house and managed to pass on nearly all of the old guttering via freecycle. Much better than it being skipped.
Rain forecast for today, but tomorrow looks to be nice :cool:It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

Sorry to hear you and the dog have been poorly, BD. I thought you were quiet, but sometimes people who are quiet are busy, bashing, on.
I'd guess that many of us might need to take a breather after the fine weather, and today looks like giving us the chance! Not raining here yet, but it won't be long. Not what holidaymakers want, of course, but the plants & animals will be glad of it.
Should be OK tomorrow again.
What sort of bare root plants did you buy? I was surprised to see some places still selling them last week, as almost all of mine, in the ground now, have leaves. After a couple of tedious months planting, it's great to see the growth starting.0 -
Slow start.
We're putting some wood chip around the trees we have planted and each time the wheel barrow goes back in that direction loading it with logs, which means stopping to chop them. One of the fires stayed a live through the night so we'll keep that going through till the rain starts at least.
This afternoon we might do some housework, or maybe some painting, who knows.
