the only thing I can think of at the mo.
as its Lambing season.. maybe a farmers has his sheep indoors, and he is starting up a generator for light??
is there a farmer's milking parlour somewhere??
at 5am in the morning that farm could also be a fair distance away, and the sound is travelling... in the 'still of the night' ( whitesnake song lol)Work to live= not live to work0 -
I am soooooooo tired.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Thanks both.
Well, lets hope its a tractor then....as in a pretty temporary type noise and one that will only be going for a couple of hours of "night time". Shows how little I know about how things work in farming areas that I have no idea how many days a tractor is likely to be ploughing for (presume it will be just a couple of days a year??).
I wouldn't have thought noise from a milking parlour would travel very far at all? and, if it did, then it would have happened before now, as it would be a daily thing throughout the year presumably.
Hopes its not a generator...but I suppose clue as to whether its tractor or generator will be that a tractor will stop once it starts getting to dusk, but a generator would continue throughout the night:eek: How long does lambing season go on for?
Am guessing that Dave's verdict as to noise is probably the most likely one, and I certainly see some blimmin' huge tractors going down the roads round here.0 -

Sorry, but I've been taking a rest today, although driving down to the Eden Project and back wasn't really my idea of resting!
DW and I didn't want to visit Eden, but my DD and her young man, being into art and architecture, wanted to see it. So, we took them there, then drove off to do something a bit cheaper! :rotfl:
After having a nose around the quirky town of Lostwithiel, we arrived in the Luxulyan Valley, a place someone recommended on MSE a few weeks ago. It's a great little wooded combe for both industrial archeology and wildlife, so we cobbled together a 2 mile circular walk and just ambled along. We had it to ourselves, and it was genuinely shirtsleeves weather too. Lovely!
So, no work done here today.Of course, as soon as we went away, there was a log delivery and Pete arrived to sort out a lame sheep, but probably treated the wrong one!

Well I had grand plans of spending time in the garden however I slept instead
Rumlet is under the weather so he has been unsettled and clingy so sleep won over gardening. However I am hoping to get out there tomorrow, weather permitting.
We have had a real run of bad news this week and I could do with a wee run of good luck.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

Only you can decide when to get off the treadmill, having more idea how health and finances are likely to play out, but even then it's not knowledge, just an educated guess. Often, people leave it too late. There again, there are others who actually need the treadmill more than they realise!
I am not one of the latter. Terrible feeling making the break, but once the ties were severed.....
Thanks for these sensible points Dave. I am taking early retirement in approximately 6 weeks, and am feeling a bit wobbly about it. It doesn't help that the people I work with, both inside and outside of the organisation seem to be in some kind of denial and loads of new projects, which I won't be there to deliver, keep getting piled on :eek:0 -
Shirtsleeves weather yesterday Dave:(. The "frown" smilie will have to do instead of an "envy" smilie....think it "might" have been warm enough yesterday here, but there was wind (again).
Yesterday was a "Bad Day Here", starting with that "plane noise type noise" (though, thanks all, it was reassuring to know its just a temporary type noise)/followed by Antisocial Nearby Neighbour having her dog outside Yet A Blimmin' Again (despite the fact she knows it barks a lot when it is and there are plenty of nearby houses to hear it...but I'm probably the only one with the courage to go and ask her to shut it up...as I've done before)/followed by a bit of damage by one workman and Yet Another Blimmin' Letdown by another workman (those workman letdowns that are so frequent in this area that some people manage to make jokes about it...I don't).
Fingers crossed for a day today of the "quiet" that is part of what I chose this area for/decent weather for once and no further workman letdowns. Yesterday was definitely one of "I want MY weather, MY thing that dogs do NOT get kept outdoors, MY area's level of workman reliability etc".
So, think positive and remember Dave's comments about it taking a while to "settle in" on the one hand and the average dogs lifespan is 11 years (so neighbours dog will be gone one day and lets hope she doesn't replace it or follows standard practice and keeps replacement indoors).
Must just stay patient and I will get the things I chose this area for: the quiet/the detached house with productive garden/weather good enough to get out and about a bit.
It was about 2 years wasn't it Dave that you said it took you to "feel settled"? A friendly little woman who was chatting to me the other day said it would take me "3-4 years"...I do hope its not as long as that...
Meanwhile, it helps that Welsh class has provided an obvious group of friends..people in the same position as myself (English/similar agegroup/new to area) and so I've started to get some more social outings. Another interest group that I found here is also a goodie...as the person leading it is very "professional" in their attitude and yet such a social being that she obviously regards it as a friendship group and there are all sorts of offshoots from it (so we're lucky to have someone like her in charge).
I'll get that garden in hand yet too...0
