IHS, being half way down a slope is better than being at the bottom, but if the water table is that high, a drain may not be able to shift enough to make a large difference while things are really wet. Any water taken away from a given point may just be replenished immediately.

And then there's the tricky problem over where the water will go. Assuming it's a soakaway, won't that also be overwhelmed?

I have much experience of this here with the septic tank drainage, which can just back-up and rise to the surface when things get really wet. As it's in the field, we live with it, but even if it were in the garden, there'd be nothing we could do.

At least when things start to dry out, it should help.:)

air source davesnave. we have a sort of header you'd get in a hotel rather than a house though, to make it work practically in our weird shaped and sized house

Ah, yes I remember now. It was a system they'd developed to run properly with rads. ;)

You must tell me more when you're connected. I could envisage something like that here, as we have room for a big tank, if necessary, maybe linked to a couple of thermal collectors too for extra 'oomph.' :)

Trouble is, I can envisage all sorts of things! :o

Dave, thank you for the links. I know why I was confused before. It was the word 'rail' that, in my head, turned to 'railings' & I was picturing them as metal instead of wood. Told you I was clueless :o

Rummer, could you make a bog garden out of the wet bed you have?? No idea if any 'bog' plants are edible, but you never know!! ;)

The perforated pipes will meet at an inspection point, then there's 22mm piping to the main drain where the run-off from guttering goes, so am not totally relying on drywell.

Just have to see how it goes, I guess the wettest winter for decades has made things as bad as they will get!

Ah, that would be a no-no in many parts of England & Wales now, for obvious reasons, but if you can do it north of the border, fair enough. ;)

Hello LIR I hoep you are enjoying being warm and that you have managed a lovely hot bath :D

BetterDays I think in the short term we will go with weed control fabric and wood chips as our budget is non-existent and we can always change it in the future when we have some more pennies.

Dave Not sure where we would go for rails like that around here so I will google and see what I can find ;). Been looking at compost prices here too and they vary wildly so I need to make sure I am shopping carefully.

Pink Poppy A bog garden is something we have thought about however we are determined that the side garden will be all about food/productivity so I will need to see if there are plants that are suitable. The tyre garden may work.

OH pointed out that my garden plans were less than accurately drawn :rotfl: so he kindly drew a better diagram and using that and looking at the garden I have less space than I thought :( I think I am going to look out some pea sticks and string and start playing with layout actually in the garden instead of on paper.

we spent much of this morning pulling up weed control fabric that has got weeds growing in it:rotfl:. we [put feed, then muck then woodchipon top. fingers crossed the nfeed will combat nitrogendrawdown from the woodchip and the yews will still grow. :(

warm yes, toasty. bath...not yet. will fill in whole details when fully back.:D

 I am so annoyed  All I wanted was a wee hour to work in the garden today and as always life got in the way until I was about to step out and then the snow started. Now it has stopped snowing but the ground is soaking and the light is starting to go, humph.

On a cheerier note I am going to plant some more seeds today, more for my sanity than for anything productive :rotfl: There are still loads of glass missing from the greenhouse so the seeds are in the house but I don't really have anywhere to put them so I will need to give it all a bit more thought!
