I listed my greenhouse glass on the Bay yesterday. Put it in for auction. My first ever attempt to sell. :D

Sorry to say, it looks like duff weather over the South West today, and there won't be much of the warm stuff till Friday or Saturday here. :( After that, it looks really quite hopeful ....honest! :o:)

BD, my marigolds are up too. I always have them in the poly to cheer it up and give something to the insects that come in (and sadly, don't always find a way out again! :o)

    Hello to all the Daydreamers,
I got MIA due to work blocking MSN and combined work mania, DH travelling overseas 50%, getting a DDs SN dx (aspergers, ADHD, but hi functioning), dealing with having a live-in au pair which changes every 6 months, and havingt o give up the allotment with too much else on.

The daydream is not dead, but is on life support. I am only growing now in the pocket handkerchief back garden, but using as much space as I can for edibles there. And I think we've persuaded FIL to let us plant pumpkins and squashes in his garden this summer (lives 3 hours away but. Loves to potter, so if we grow from seed, he'll mind once planted and dd will mind on her holidays there too).

And I am putting away funds for when I can make use of them, some are rainy day but others are complete DDC. But I think the economic crash and our reality now means I will be at least late 50s before I can do that. We need dd to have finished college first, so only about 15 years away. But I probably need to wait the full 25 til I've earned full pension as OHs is now much more uncertain.

But this weekend, we cleared the back garden for spring. I had intentions of sowing broad beans and leeks for the past 5 months, but we did actually do them over the weekend. Along with summer squash, chilies, alpine strawbs, spinach, salad leaves and radishes all in pots. And some peas and spring onions direct in the ground. And as OHIO hacked the herbs to bits in the cutting back process, I put a bag of chopped sage into the freezer and rescued 3 stalks of rosemary in the kitchen for fresh (I dried a lot last year, so don't need more dried now).

The next few weeks should see more sowing like broad beans directly into soil, carrots in a tub, more salad in a window box, and French beans (dwarf for window ledges and climbing for a tub and along 1 fence), and maybe a second fence of peas or mangetout. When the season is right, I will be buying 3 tomatoes (1 for a tall tub, 2 to share a hanging basket) and 2 courgettes.

I also long to get back to using my sewing machine and other useful crafts, but that will have to wait until I have more time.

I am looking forward to catching up on how all your plans have progressed since I fell off the map last too.

:j Yay for nap time :j

While my gorgeous boy was grabbing some zzzzzzzs I went on a seed planting frenzy :D My window ledges are now lined with tinfoil and bursting with seed trays filled with small amounts of everything! That is all my indoor sowing veggies done so now I need to get the flowers planted however that will be kept for another day ;)

In the garden I am hoping to sneak out each evening (weather permitting) when my hubby gets home to weed and prep so that I can get my garden sorted. This year I am going for the little and often approach :)

There are still the salad crops to consider however I am unsure as to where they are going in the garden but I think they will fill the tubs although I have quite a few that are headed lettuces and there is little to no room for them, hmmmm.

I do have slight regret about not taking on the allotment this year while I am off and have the time to get it sorted but I know it was the right decision when I didn't know how things would go. Plus it was far more expensive for a year than I thought. Ah well, once I have our garden maxed out I will turn my thoughts to it again.

Hi Winged one, nice to have you back.

Only you can decide when to get off the treadmill, having more idea how health and finances are likely to play out, but even then it's not knowledge, just an educated guess. Often, people leave it too late. There again, there are others who actually need the treadmill more than they realise! ;)

I am not one of the latter. Terrible feeling making the break, but once the ties were severed.....

Anyway, I have my own treadmill now. :rotfl:

Today, I made great use of the two strong young men who are here ATM and shifted the impossibly heavy 4 storey ferret cage from its location near the house to the bottom barn. Even with an ex-British Rail platform trolley that was quite a feat! I really can't see that thing ever moving from here, but at least it's out of the way now. :D

We then put the vastly inferior, 3 storey Chinese ferret cage that went to uni on top of the other one! :rotfl:7 storeys of potential ferret space, but we will fill them with bits and pieces I expect.

Back on the land, with rain threatening, I was able to persuade some of my workforce to stay and help me clear the remaining tree branches etc from the Dog End. We then bonfired the lot, so that's all the winter clearings done & dusted.

It didn't rain much. With the weather forecast telling us that "rain from the west will eventually clear eastwards," and the wind being from the south east, later veering due east, I was hardly surprised! :p

May be for the best though, lucielle, and if they're collies, easier to find homes. :)

Having a rest today. :D Just need to find somewhere out of the northerly wind.......

I reckon this would be the right thread to ask on with a query right now.

A plane started taking off in the middle of the night (at around 5 a.m.) and has been constantly taking off without stop ever since. Well...that's what it sounds like and I keep waiting for that plane to gain height and fly off and the noise will stop. Only it hasn't and its constant and coming from the same direction I've heard the occasional sound of cows and sheep coming from.

This is going to sound like Daft Question of the Day but, as it obviously isn't a plane, then what is it and how much longer is the noise likely to go on for? I am guessing it might be some item of farm machinery that has been put into service for the first time since I moved here and its "doing its thing" and will continue making constant noise until the farmer switches it off (which hopefully will be soon now).

Anyone got an item of farm machinery that makes a "plane taking off noise" of a constant nature and would be likely to start using it in middle of night (5 a.m. ish or so anyway) and will know what's going on please?

I'm guessing it won't be noise of a "construction" type nature (ie down to some new houses being built nearby), as ones like that wouldn't start during the night.

Many big tractors sound like planes, as they have truly huge engines.

At this time of year it is likely to be ploughing, unless you can hear clattering as well, which would be harrowing. (Very! :rotfl:)

This sort of thing goes on where there is arable land. The contractor may be planning a long day if it started at first light!

EDIT: Just checked. North wind this morning and plenty of arable in the coastal belt north of you. :)
