3rd decent day of the year in Glasgow, the temp. in conservatory rocketed close to 70 (or 19 in new money)!

That prompted a look around the garden, did some weeding while the sun was out, using a long-handled weeder while standing on the lawn. The beds are still totally sodden, so stepping on the ground was avoided.

Despite the rain, rain and rain not too many obviously dead plants caused by rotting off, most of the perennials are showing signs of life and the clematis have green buds.

The tiny blue iris are just coming out, also some of the 1st crocus - not sure how many weeks we are behind where I used to live in Cambs - maybe 3?

Potted up all the perennials I'd bought over the last few weeks - peony, eryngium, red-hot poker, dahlia, aquilegia etc. They'll be left to shoot in the conservatory.

I potted up the Rosa rugosa 'alba' but left that outside, not sure what to do with that TBH - may try it over the pergola but it has the reputation of taking over...

Also potted-on some summer bedding I got as plugs from Aldi - zinnia and Cinerama.

Conservatory is now looking rather full, what with the over-wintered cannas etc!

I could do it personally...as little Ms Ordinary In the Street. They'd be gone quick sharp or I'd be looking into trespass thoughts/local newspaper article about trespass thoughts/or just plain set the local hunt saboteurs onto them. I used to know at least where to start in finding people like that if I wanted to in last location. I've now got 3 "know everyone around here" type contacts and I'm guessing I could find my way to get hold of some if need be by now:rotfl:

i am not a "supporter" or "rider" with the hunt BUT when you say
"or just plain set the local hunt saboteurs onto them"
this leaves me cold im afraid. it does nothing for people like me who can peaceably disagree but would never harm some one in the process. its whats known as jumping the gun before all facts are known......
i personally know LIR and to ASSUME she was "under threat" is laughable...
she is a helpfull person and the reasons are for her personal consumption me thinks...

I WILL ADD I HAVE RESCUED FOX CUBS FOR MANY YEARS AND NOT FROM THE HUNT BUT FROM STUPID PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY ARE "HELPING" THEM.

im off my soapbox now ;)

    no offence intended to anyone

DH made curry tonight. I hasten to add that hunt staff were not in it. Neither were hounds.

Re rescued foxes, I have heard some very odd things. E.g. I once found a very placid fox in the road. She seemed physically un wounded but was very certainly not ok and I suspected poison.

I was miles away from my normal patch where I would have had access to a few good vets and after some dithering called a large rescue who asked me to take her in, so I did.

When I got there they told me that this is what hunts did, poisoned foxes so it was easier for their hounds to rip them up, dozens each day, and they didn't have to chase them so far. Every one there tutted and nodded.

Now, like hunting or not, this is silly. They idea for many is the 'riding far' ( far more than the catching) and no one would want hounds ingesting poison. This sort of myth makes me almost want to lever myself out hunting, as much as the 'nothing ever goes wrong ' tales of pro hunting lobby make me roll my eyes.

As a owner of a dogs here, I'd rather big dog got a fox than poison did. Without a doubt. I'd rather the foxes just kept their distance where I can love watching them and not worry about impact. There aren't many guns I'd trust. Not me, that's for sure. Loads of people come round offering their services as pet control with guns and/ or terriers or even birds of prey here.

I don't really mind pigeons myself. I know my neighbours lose their rag with the starlings occasionally, so we put up some bird scares last year, they worked.

I'd choose a responsible and experienced hunt for pest control over some unknown guy with terriers and a gun, certainly. Thankfully, haven't resorted to either yet.

Thanks for the seeds, RAS :D; they arrived yesterday, when our postie eventually decided to take the van out and do his round. Maybe he was clearing a ditch, or something important like that, earlier on! :rotfl:

I took myself out for a walk along the river in the afternoon. It always amazes me how easy it is to disappear from human sight just a mile from the village. The track I was following isn't an 'official' one, and it hadn't been walked since the river was last out, which was at least a few weeks back. Saw a hind at close quarters, which was nice. :)

I hear beavers are living in Devon now. They would be well at home in our area, judging by the state of the river....

I didn't realise your opinion on hunting and therefore assumed mentioning it meant "against it" iyswim. I've only ever come across one other person who commented pro-hunting ever in my life (one person on the Internet the other day) and never met anyone ITRW who ever was. Its my experience that people only ever mention hunting to express an opinion against it.

Therefore, my assumption that anyone with the other viewpoint simply never mentions it anywhere.

I was not meaning to be "personal"...I was just very surprised.

The only other mention I've ever seen was a recent one talking about an annual hunt event in my new locality. I was very surprised to see that mentioned in the media in a "just another event" tone of voice and just made the decision that I obviously can't be anywhere near that event in case I found myself disagreeing with any "locals" I know etc etc.

Anyways, having found my assumption as to why you mentioned it was incorrect...back to the gardening theme...

When I had ponies, MANY moons ago.... I used to go on the hunt... there is more to Hunting than trying to catch a fox... its the social interaction etc... I don't think we ever managed to get a fox when we went out ... so the assumption by people who have never hunted, that umpteem foxes are caught are totally untrue..

Even though hunting foxes is banned the tradition of the actual hunt goes on, as I said its all about the interaction of it all, Plus I have noticed a lot more foxes dead on the road, hit by cars etc...

I am not saying it was right or wrong... It was a part of our country life...
